THE FLASH DRIVE IN THE DARK / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Man in the Safe HouseThe location hidden in the video led us to an abandoned cabin outside Palm Springs.

We found my father there.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then he looked at me.

“My little girl.”

I ran into his arms.

He cried.

So did I.

“You're alive.”

“I wanted to come home.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“Because Daniel threatened you.”

My father explained everything.

He had discovered Daniel's financial crimes before my wedding.

He tried to stop him.

Daniel threatened to expose forged documents that would make my father appear responsible for the fraud.

Then Daniel arranged for my father to disappear.

My mother knew.

“She believed Daniel would kill you if I returned.”

I stepped back.

“My mother knew you were alive?”

“Yes.”

I felt betrayed all over again.

“What happened to the money?”

My father shook his head.

“Most of it wasn't stolen.”

“What?”

“It was moved.”

“To where?”

“An offshore trust.”

He explained that Daniel had created a hidden network of accounts.

But there was one problem.

He couldn't access the final account without my signature.

“Why mine?”

“Because you're the legal beneficiary.”

Suddenly I understood.

Daniel didn't simply need me alive.

He needed me cooperative.

And if I refused, he needed me gone.

My father handed me a small metal key.

“This opens the original trust documents.”

“Where?”

“Under the old Carter estate.”

I stared at him.

“Our house?”

He nodded.

“The basement.”

We returned that night.

The mansion was empty.

We entered through a side door.

The house felt different now.

Every hallway carried memories.

Every room felt like a trap.

In the basement, my father found a hidden panel.

Inside was a metal safe.

The key opened it.

There were letters.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

And a sealed envelope addressed to me.

I opened it.

My father's handwriting filled the page.

Evelyn, if you are reading this, I failed to protect you.

Daniel is not who he claims to be.

But neither is someone you trust.

I looked at Vanessa.

My father continued.

The woman closest to Daniel may be the only person capable of exposing him.

I looked at Vanessa again.

She began crying.

“I didn't know about this letter.”

Then we heard footsteps upstairs.

Someone was inside the house.

My father whispered:

“Hide.”

We turned off the lights.

A man's voice echoed through the hallway.

“Evelyn.”

Daniel.

He knew we were there.

“You can't hide forever.”

I grabbed Vanessa's hand.

My father moved toward the basement exit.

Then a loud crash came from upstairs.

Daniel shouted.

“Your father is already dead to you!”

My blood ran cold.

He knew.

He had known for years.

We escaped through the old service tunnel beneath the house.

Outside, police vehicles waited.

My father had called them before we entered.

Daniel was arrested.

For the first time, I thought it was over.

But Daniel smiled as officers handcuffed him.

“You still don't know what Vanessa did.”

I looked at her.

She went pale.

May you like

Daniel laughed.

“Ask her about Rachel.”
