Chapter 9 - The Legacy GalaThat evening, the grand ballroom of the Newport Mansion hosted the annual Carter Global Foundation Gala.

Over five hundred prominent philanthropists, political leaders, and international dignitaries filled the grand space under sparkling crystal chandeliers. The event raised over twenty million dollars in a single night to fund emergency shelters and legal aid networks worldwide.
I stood on the grand stage, wearing a breathtaking sapphire-blue gown, holding the microphone in my hands. Beside me stood William, Julian, and little Alexander.
"Three years ago," I spoke into the microphone, my voice clear, confident, and echoing smoothly across the silent ballroom, "I was left alone on a frozen mountain cliff. I was told that I was powerless. I was told that my life was worth fifty million dollars to a man who wanted to destroy me."
The audience listened in absolute, breathless silence.
"But fear is only a shadow," I continued, looking out at the crowd with a radiant, powerful smile. "And love is an unyielding light. When we stand together, when we protect each other, no darkness on earth can ever extinguish our hope."
The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
As I stepped down from the stage, Julian took my hand, pulling me into a gentle, warm embrace, his lips meeting mine in a kiss that tasted of sweet promise and eternal devotion.

My phone, resting in my evening clutch, chimed softly with a automatic notification from the New York State Department of Corrections: Inmate Ethan Harper's petition for facility transfer has been denied. Status: Maximum Security - Ineligible for Parole.
I locked the screen without a second thought, slipping the phone away forever.
