Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s Door

I did not confront Vanessa at first. Grace told me patience would help more than rage, and for once I listened. We subpoenaed records through the divorce process and requested an independent review under my shareholder rights. Daniel immediately tried to block it. That told me enough. But Emma had no interest in patience. Two days after we found the condo, she disappeared after class and drove straight to the Gold Coast address. I learned about it because Caleb called me from his car. “Mom, Emma went to Vanessa’s.” My blood ran cold. “How do you know?” “Find My Friends.” I grabbed my keys. “Stay where you are.” “I’m already going.” “Caleb—” He hung up.

By the time I reached the condominium lobby, Emma and Vanessa were already arguing beside the elevators. Vanessa wore cream trousers and a silk blouse, looking exactly like the polished consultant Daniel admired. Emma held a manila envelope containing photographs she had secretly copied from my investigator’s packet. “How many birthdays?” Emma demanded. “How many times did my dad leave us for you?” Vanessa glanced at the concierge. “You need to leave.” “Answer me.” “This isn’t your business.” Emma laughed bitterly. “He’s my father.” Vanessa stepped closer. “And you’re a child who doesn’t understand adult relationships.” Emma slapped her.

The sound echoed through the marble lobby.

Vanessa’s head snapped sideways. Emma immediately looked shocked by what she had done.

Then Vanessa shoved her hard.

Emma stumbled into a decorative table, knocking a vase sideways. Caleb rushed through the door just as Vanessa grabbed Emma’s wrist. “Let go of her!” He shoved Vanessa away from his sister. Vanessa stumbled backward. A security guard yelled for everyone to stop. Then Daniel appeared from the elevator.

That was the moment everything truly exploded.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Daniel shouted.

Emma stared at him. “You live here?”

Daniel froze.

Vanessa looked at him.

Caleb did too.

I arrived seconds later.

Daniel’s expression told me the truth before any paperwork could.

He had clothes upstairs.

Furniture.

A toothbrush.

A second home.

Emma’s eyes filled. “You live with her?”

“No.”

Vanessa crossed her arms. “Daniel.”

He shot her a warning look.

That was enough.

Emma turned away and started toward the doors. Daniel grabbed her elbow. “You are not walking away from me again.” Caleb stepped between them. “Let her go.” Daniel shoved Caleb back. My son lunged. The two slammed into the lobby wall. Daniel grabbed Caleb by the collar. Caleb hit his father’s forearm and twisted free. Security rushed in. I grabbed Emma and pulled her behind me.

“Enough!”

Daniel pointed at Caleb. “He attacked me!”

“You grabbed Emma.”

“She assaulted Vanessa!”

Emma whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Daniel turned on her. “You should be.”

I had never seen my daughter’s face change so quickly.

“Not to you.”

She looked at Vanessa.

“I’m sorry I hit you.”

Vanessa nodded once, surprised.

Then Emma looked at Daniel.

“But you? I’m done apologizing for being angry at things you actually did.”

The guard separated us.

I told Daniel we were leaving.

He followed me outside.

“Claire, wait.”

“No.”

“You cannot take my children away.”

“They are seventeen and nineteen.”

“Caleb is a minor.”

“And you just physically fought with him in a condominium lobby.”

“He came at me!”

“After you grabbed Emma.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Why are you making me sound like some violent monster?”

I stared at him.

“I’m describing what happened.”

He looked frightened by that.

Facts had become dangerous to him.

The following morning, a temporary custody arrangement limited unsupervised contact with Caleb until the incident was reviewed. Daniel blamed me.

But the condo gave us something more important.

Records.

The purchase trail linked the down payment to three development subsidiaries.

One belonged partly to my family holding company.

Nora called me.

“Claire, I need you to sit down.”

“I’m beginning to hate that sentence.”

“The condo isn't the biggest problem.”

“What is?”

“Daniel has pledged your Whitmore shares as collateral.”

My breath stopped.

“He can’t.”

“He did.”

“How?”

“We’re checking signatures.”

I felt cold.

May you like

Then she said the word I had been afraid of.

“Claire, I think some of them may be forged.”
