Chapter 11 - Vanessa Comes Back

Vanessa returned eighteen months later.
Not romantically.
Not dramatically.
She came to my office.
I almost had security remove her.
Instead, curiosity won.
She looked different.
No designer armor.
No perfect hair.
She sat across from me.
“I owe you an apology.”
“Yes.”
She blinked.
I had no reason to make this easy.
“I knew he was married.”
“Yes.”
“I knew about Emma and Caleb.”
“Yes.”
“I told myself your marriage was already dead.”
“It wasn’t yours to diagnose.”
She nodded.
“You’re right.”
Then she said something unexpected.
“I hated you.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel talked about you like you were invisible, but every time something mattered, he still asked what you would think.”
My chest tightened.
“He loved your judgment and resented needing it.”
That sounded painfully accurate.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought if he chose me, I’d prove I was more important.”
“And?”
“I learned choosing someone isn’t the same as respecting them.”
She had eventually discovered Daniel lied to her too.
About money.
About when he would leave.
About ownership.
About the children.
“I’m not asking forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“I’m asking you to know I’m sorry.”
I looked at her.
“I believe you.”
She cried.
I did not hug her.
We were not friends.
May you like
But I no longer needed her to be a villain forever.
That freedom belonged to me.
