Melissa, the photographer from that family portrait, retired ten years later.
Before closing her studio, she sent me a package.
Inside was a large print.
The portrait.
Me.
Emma.
Caleb.
No Daniel.
I stared for a long time.
Jonathan found me.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“Who’s missing?”
I smiled.
“Nobody.”

Daniel eventually remarried too.
Her name was Catherine.
A nonprofit executive.
Strong opinions.
Zero interest in being managed.
I liked her immediately.
Before they married, Daniel told her everything.
Not the cleaned-up version.
Everything.
Catherine called me once.
“Do you think he changed?”
I answered carefully.
“Yes.”
“Would you marry him again?”
“No.”
She laughed.
“Fair.”
Then I said, “But you’re not marrying the man I married.”
That was also true.
People change.
