Chapter 8 - The Video in the Light

I walked up to the respondent’s table, setting Maya’s portable bassinet safely beside Sarah Vance before turning to face the bench.
"Your Honor," Sarah Vance announced, her voice ringing with thunderous clarity. "We are not here today to divide marital property. We are here to present direct forensic evidence of premeditated attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, and felony child abuse."
Julian’s attorney jumped to his feet, stammering in panic: "Objection! This is a civil divorce hearing! Counsel cannot introduce unverified criminal allegations without prior discovery notice!"
"The objection is overruled," Judge Holloway snapped with icy authority. "Detective Ramos, connect the exhibit to the court monitors."
Detective Ramos placed the garage recording unit onto the evidence table, connecting the secure drive to the courtroom’s primary display system.
With a single click, the large monitors on the courtroom walls flickered to life.
The 4K video filled the room. The audio was pristine and deafening:
Julian: "If she won’t sign the house over, Mom, we’ll make it look like a pregnancy accident." The screen showed Julian violently shoving me into the stove. The screen showed the boiling soup cascading across my pregnant body. The screen captured my agonizing screams: 'My baby! Please, someone save my baby!' The screen showed Evelyn calmly sipping coffee and wiping the counter.
Gasps of pure horror erupted from the spectator gallery. Two female court stenographers covered their mouths in tears.
Judge Holloway rose from her high-backed chair, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of her wooden bench, staring down at Julian with a fury so intense the air in the courtroom seemed to freeze.

Julian turned around toward his mother, his face bathed in cold sweat, his breath hyperventilating. "Mom... you told me you wiped the hard drives! You told me the cameras were gone!"
"Quiet!" Evelyn shrieked, backing against the wooden pew in absolute terror.
