Chapter 2 - The Fabricated Fall

"Call 911!" I sobbed, my vision blurring into a haze of blinding pain and white light. The skin along my right cheek and shoulder was blistering violently, blistering and tearing as I pressed my left arm against my stomach, feeling my unborn daughter kicking erratically in sudden distress. "Please! Call an ambulance!"
Evelyn rose from the table, walked over to where my phone lay on the counter, picked it up, and dropped it directly into her handbag. Then she took a roll of paper towels and began calmly wiping down the stovetop splatter, ensuring no fingerprints remained on the pot handles.
Julian quickly unhooked the visible security camera mounted near the kitchen pantry ceiling, ripping the power cable and stuffing the unit into his jacket pocket.
Only then did Julian pick up his own phone, dialing the emergency operator while forcing a frantic, panicked tremor into his voice:
"Operator! Please send an ambulance to 412 Ridge Road immediately! My eight-month pregnant wife slipped on a puddle in the kitchen and pulled a hot soup pot off the stove! It was a terrible accident... she's severely burned!"
Twenty minutes later, the wail of sirens pierced the quiet neighborhood. Paramedics rushed into the kitchen, applying sterile saline burn sheets to my face, chest, and arms as they loaded me onto a gurney.
"Her vitals are crashing," the lead paramedic shouted. "Fetal heart rate is dangerously elevated at 190 beats per minute! We need an immediate trauma and OB-GYN transport to St. Matthew’s Medical Center!"
Through the haze of pain, I saw Julian standing on the front porch, wrapping his arm around Evelyn, wiping away fake tears for the arriving neighbors.
He thought he had covered every trace. He thought he had destroyed the only lens that saw his crime.

What Julian had forgotten was that my father was a senior telecommunications engineer who had worked for decades in defense network security. Three years before his death, my father had installed a secondary, hardwired commercial surveillance hub concealed inside the garage electrical panel, routing 24/7 video and audio directly to an encrypted, off-site cloud server that only he and his estate attorney could access.
As the ambulance doors slammed shut, I whispered a single vow into the sterile oxygen mask: Stay alive, Elena. Survive for your daughter.
