Chapter 9 - Temporary Haven

By nightfall, the chaotic and vibrant energy of a six-year-old boy had completely transformed the cold, sterile luxury of Dominic Russo’s Park Avenue penthouse. Leo, wide-eyed with wonder, was currently exploring the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing Manhattan skyline, while Tony and his men quietly secured every entry point of the fortress-like apartment. Nora stood in the ultra-modern chef’s kitchen, watching Dominic sit by the large mahogany dining table reviewing digital security feeds and tactical blueprints alongside his loyal capos. She walked over, setting a cup of strong tea down in front of him. “You should be resting, Dominic, not planning a military assault,” Nora noted quietly. Dominic looked up, softening his expression as he took the mug. “I’ve rested enough these past four months, Nora. Carmine made a critical mistake today. He thought attacking a bakery would break my spirit. Instead, he gave me the exact motivation I needed to clean house.” “Is it dangerous?” Nora asked, her voice carrying genuine concern for his safety. “For Carmine, yes,” Dominic replied with a grim smile. “For me? I’ve already faced the worst he could throw at me when he put a bullet in my back. Everything after this is just housekeeping.” Nora pulled out a chair and sat beside him, watching the way his men looked at him with absolute, unwavering devotion. They didn't see a paralyzed boss in a wheelchair; they saw a leader who had returned from the brink of death to protect his own. “What happens after you clean house?” Nora asked softly. Dominic turned his head, his slate-grey eyes locking onto hers with a warmth that completely eclipsed the cold maps spread across the table. “I suppose that depends on whether my favorite baker decides to stick around once the smoke clears.” Nora’s cheeks flushed a soft pink, but she didn't look away. Before she could answer, Leo came running over, holding up a plush teddy bear he had found in the guest suite. “Mommy, Mr. Dominic has the biggest TV in the world! Can we watch cartoons?” Dominic laughed, the sound echoing through the penthouse like a long-awaited blessing. “Turn on whatever you want, buddy,” Dominic told the boy. “The entire network belongs to you tonight.”
