Chapter 6 - Unlikely Allies

Instead of leaving, Dominic accepted Nora’s reluctant invitation to sit at one of the small wooden tables near the front window while she brewed a fresh pot of coffee. The morning sunlight streamed through the clean glass, illuminating the cozy chaos of the bakery. Leo sat nearby, contentedly coloring in a superhero comic book while keeping one eye on Dominic’s wheelchair with fascinated curiosity. Nora set a steaming mug of black coffee down in front of Dominic, pulling up a chair opposite him with a soft sigh. “You know, for a terrifying underworld boss who controls half the importing ports on the East Coast, you sure picked a strange place to hang out,” Nora noted dryly, wrapping her hands around her own mug. “Most powerful men in your position would be surrounding themselves with bodyguards and armored compounds.” “I have plenty of armored compounds, Nora,” Dominic replied, taking a slow sip of the hot coffee. It was surprisingly good—strong, dark, and rich. “And I have plenty of bodyguards. But none of them ever had the courage to tell me my birthday party was too quiet.” Nora smiled faintly, shaking her head. “Look, Dominic, I appreciate that you’re trying to look out for us after what you mentioned about your cousin Carmine. But my life is simple. I bake, I raise my son, and I pay my bills. I don't want to get tangled up in whatever violent feud you have going on.” Dominic’s expression turned serious, his slate-grey eyes holding hers with intense focus. “Carmine isn't just running a feud, Nora. He’s a ruthless opportunist who lacks discipline and respect for innocent lives. The moment he realizes you and Leo are connected to me, he will try to use you as leverage. That’s why my men are outside, and that’s why I’m here.” Nora swallowed hard, the coffee suddenly tasting a bit heavier in her throat. She looked over at Leo, who was humming happily as he colored, completely unaware of the dark currents swirling around them. “Is he going to come here?” she whispered. “Not if I stop him first,” Dominic vowed quietly, his voice carrying an absolute, chilling certainty that left no room for doubt. Nora studied the scarred, intense face of the man sitting before her—a man broken in body but unbreakable in spirit. For the first time, she realized that beneath the tailored suit and the mafia myths was a lonely human being who had been betrayed by the very people he trusted most. “Well,” Nora said softly, reaching across the table to tap her mug gently against his. “If Carmine tries to mess with my bakery, he’ll find out why single mothers are the most dangerous people in New York.” Dominic laughed, a warm spark igniting in his chest. In that quiet corner bakery, surrounded by the smell of baking bread and the laughter of a child, Dominic Russo realized he had found something far more valuable than a throne: he had found an ally.
