Chapter 12 - The Final Confrontation

Two weeks of grueling, daily rehabilitation sessions under Nora’s merciless coaching had transformed Dominic. While he wasn't running marathons yet, he could now support his weight using forearm crutches for short distances, and the dead numbness in his legs had been replaced by a pulsing, waking fire of recovering nerves. But there was no time to celebrate milestones; the war with Carmine Russo had reached its boiling point. That Friday night, acting on intelligence provided by Tony Mancini, Dominic learned that Carmine was hosting a secret summit with corrupt union leaders and hostile capos at the Whitmore Hotel—specifically inside the very ballroom where Dominic had been abandoned on his birthday. Dominic decided it was time to reclaim his throne. Dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, standing steadily on his own two feet supported by hidden forearm crutches beneath his sleeves, Dominic stepped out of the private elevator on the penthouse level of the Whitmore Hotel, flanked by Tony and twenty loyal enforcers. Nora stood near the service entrance, watching him with a heart full of pride and nervous anxiety. “Be careful,” she whispered, kissing his cheek before he stepped out. “I have a bakery to run. I need my favorite customer back in one piece.” Dominic smiled, kissing her forehead. “Wait for me here. I’ll be back in twenty minutes.” The heavy brass doors of the Alexandria Room swung open. Inside, Carmine Russo stood at the head of the fifty round tables, addressing thirty corrupt associates who were eagerly drinking his champagne. “The old era is dead! The cripple is locked away in his penthouse, and today we divide his territory!” Carmine shouted triumphantly. “Is that right, cousin?” A deep, resonant voice echoed from the doorway. The room fell into absolute, terrifying silence. Carmine and his associates spun around. Walking down the center aisle, stepping one deliberate, steady foot after another without a wheelchair, was Dominic Russo. His shoulders were back, his eyes burned with divine fury, and his posture radiated the unstoppable authority of a true king reclaiming his crown. Carmine’s face turned the color of chalk, his jaw dropping in sheer horror. “No... impossible... you can't walk!” Carmine stammered, stumbling backward into a table. Dominic stopped ten feet away, leaning slightly on his hidden support, his voice cutting through the ballroom like a razor blade. “You made two fatal mistakes, Carmine,” Dominic declared, stepping closer with every word. “You thought my wheelchair meant my empire was yours for the taking. And you were foolish enough to threaten an innocent family.” Before Carmine’s men could even reach for their weapons, Tony and Dominic’s enforcers flooded the ballroom, subduing the traitors in a swift, bloodless tactical sweep. Carmine tripped over his own feet, landing flat on his back at Dominic’s polished shoes. Dominic looked down at his treacherous cousin, cold and absolute. “Welcome to my birthday party, Carmine. You’re just in time for the reckoning.”
