THE EMERALD HEIRLOOM / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Unmasking the LieI hid in the wet alley behind a dumpster, holding my breath as the dark SUV sped past the entrance, its tires screeching on the asphalt. Julian had sacrificed his freedom—or his life—to give me a head start. I was alone again, but fear had ceased to control me. It had turned into cold, sharp rage.

I spent the next thirty-six hours moving between cheap motels, paying cash, and avoiding any street corners equipped with security cameras. Using a burner phone, I contacted an old friend from high school, Marcus, who worked as a audio-visual technician for high-end corporate events.

"Emily?" Marcus gasped over the line when I called him. "Are you insane? Your face is all over the news! The police are calling you an armed and dangerous thief who assaulted Margaret Whitmore!"

"It's all a lie, Marcus," I said, my voice steady. "I need your help. Are you working the Whitmore Gala tomorrow night at the Grand Regency Hotel?"

There was a long silence on the line. "Yeah... my company is handling the main projector screens and audio feeds for the main ballroom. Why?"

"I need you to patch a laptop into the main projection feed during Margaret’s keynote speech."

"Emily, that's suicide! Apex security will tear me apart!"

"Marcus," I pleaded softly. "They killed my mother. They destroyed my family and left me with nothing. This is the only chance I have to prove my innocence and bring them down. Please."

Marcus groaned on the other end of the line. "If I do this... you owe me a beer for the rest of my life."

"Deal."

The night of the gala arrived. Rain washed over the grand entrance of the Grand Regency Hotel, where valets were parking luxury sports cars and paparazzi cameras flashed continuously as Chicago’s wealthy elite walked the red carpet.

I arrived in the back of a food delivery truck, disguised in a chef's uniform with my dark hair pinned up under a black cap. Carrying a tray of silver serving platters, I walked past the busy kitchen staff and slipped into the backstage technical area behind the main ballroom.

Marcus was waiting near the main AV control rig, sweating profusely.

"You're late," he whispered, pulling me into a quiet equipment room.

"Security was tight," I replied, stripping off the chef's jacket to reveal a stunning emerald-green vintage silk dress—a dress Julian had stashed in my bag before we were separated. It was the exact color of my grandmother’s brooch.

I plugged my laptop into the primary server rack. The screen showed the live feed of the ballroom.

Out on the stage, Margaret Whitmore stood behind a podium adorned with the gold Whitmore seal, wearing a diamond necklace worth millions. Beside her stood Daniel, looking calm, arrogant, and victorious in his custom tuxedo.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Margaret’s amplified voice echoed through the speakers, silencing the applause of five hundred guests. "Tonight, we honor the legacy of this great company. A legacy built on trust, integrity, and relentless ambition..."

I looked at Marcus and gave him a nod.

"Time to show them the real legacy," I whispered.
