THE EMERALD HEIRLOOM / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - Shadows of the PastA heavy knock sounded at my door.

I snapped the laptop shut, my heart racing like a trapped bird. I crept toward the hallway, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick off the side table.

"Emily? Open up. It's Julian."

I paused. Julian Vance was a senior investigative lawyer who had occasionally visited my grandmother before she passed. He was an older man with silver hair, sharp eyes, and an unreadable expression. My grandmother had told me to trust him if things ever went wrong.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open, keeping the chain attached. Julian stood in the dimly lit hallway, his rain-soaked trench coat dripping onto the linoleum floor. He looked around nervously before meeting my eyes.

"You need to step away from the door and let me in, Emily," he whispered gravely. "Daniel Whitmore has already bribed two precincts. They have an arrest warrant out for you right now."

I unhooked the chain and let him inside. He immediately closed the door, locked it, and pulled the blinds down over the window.

"I saw what happened at the restaurant," Julian said, his eyes lingering on the dark bruises around my arms and the dried blood on my neck. "Arthur called me right after you ran. The Whitmores are panicking."

"They aren't panicking because I took a brooch, Julian," I said, my voice surprisingly steady as I held up the tiny micro-drive. "They're panicking because of what was inside it."

Julian stared at the drive, a slow, solemn nod escaping him. "So... you opened it."

"Why didn't my grandmother tell me?" I demanded, tears of frustration rising in my eyes. "Why did she let me live in poverty, working three jobs, struggling to pay for her medicine, while those monsters lived in penthouses built on my mother's blood?"

"Because Eleanor's death wasn't an accident, Emily," Julian explained softly, stepping closer. "Margaret Whitmore had your mother killed to cover up the theft. Evelyn knew that if the Whitmores ever found out Eleanor had a surviving child, they would have eliminated you too. The only way to keep you alive was to make you completely invisible until you were old enough to fight back."

"And now?" I asked, setting the brass candlestick down. "I'm not invisible anymore. Margaret saw the brooch."

"No," Julian said, his eyes hardening with an old, suppressed fire. "You aren't invisible anymore. You're a target. But for the first time in twenty-five years, you have the weapon to destroy them."
