THE EASTER RECKONING / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Morning WarrantAt 7:30 a.m. the following morning, the seventy-two-hour eviction notice was rendered completely obsolete by the arrival of state authorities.

Three unmarked federal sedans and two state police cruisers pulled up the long driveway of my estate, their tires crunching against the wet gravel.

Senior Prosecutor Marcus Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, accompanied by four armed investigators from the Financial Crimes Division.

I opened the front door to welcome them, wearing a warm wool sweater, holding a fresh cup of coffee.

“Good morning, Margaret,” Marcus said, offering a warm, respectful nod. “The State Attorney General reviewed the documents you provided last night. The grand jury signed the emergency arrest warrants at 6:00 a.m.”

Down at the guest house, Daniel and Vanessa were woken up by the thunderous pounding of state troopers on their door.

“STATE POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY!”

Vanessa opened the door wearing a silk bathrobe, her eyes red and puffy from crying all night.

Before she could speak, two state troopers stepped inside, holding heavy steel handcuffs.

“Daniel Miller and Vanessa Miller!” the lead investigator announced, pulling out the official warrant. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement.”

Daniel sprinted out the back door of the guest house in his bare feet, trying to flee toward the wooded perimeter of the property.

“SUSPECT RUNNING!” a trooper shouted.

Two officers tackled Daniel into the wet grass near the pool, twisting his arms behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs shut around his wrists. Daniel screamed in pain and frustration, his face pressed against the muddy lawn.

Vanessa was hauled out of the guest house in handcuffs, weeping hysterically, her silk robe dragged through the dirt as she screamed at the officers. “Get your hands off me! Do you know who my family is?! You’re making a huge mistake!”

Marcus Vance walked down the lawn toward them, holding a copy of the indictment brief.

“Vanessa Miller,” Marcus said coolly, “your offshore accounts in Nevis were frozen ninety minutes ago by federal asset forfeiture officers. Every dollar you stole has been seized by the state.”

Vanessa’s screams died in her throat. She looked at her husband lying muddy and defeated in the grass, then looked up at me standing quietly on the back porch.

Her arrogant, cruel persona was completely destroyed, replaced by total, unadulterated ruin.
