THE EASTER RECKONING / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Discovery in the SafeAt 6:00 p.m., the sun began to set behind the estate’s pine trees, casting long, dark shadows across the empty driveway.

I locked the front doors from the inside, leaving Daniel and Vanessa outside on the patio under the watchful eye of Deputy Miller. They were legally allowed to remain in the guest house for their seventy-two-hour notice period, but they were strictly barred from entering my main residence.

I walked down the hallway to my late husband’s private study in the West Wing—a room I had kept locked since his passing two years ago.

Sitting behind the heavy mahogany desk, I unlocked the floor safe hidden beneath the Persian rug.

I pulled out the original family trust deeds, expecting to find only standard estate management files. But as I flipped through the secondary folder, a thick blue folder labeled PROJECT HELIOS caught my eye.

I opened it.

Inside were bank statements, wire transfers, and corporate emails dating back eighteen months—well before Daniel’s tech startup supposedly failed.

My breath hitched in my throat as I read the forensic accounting summary prepared by my late husband before his death.

Daniel had not lost his business due to bad market conditions.

He had deliberately drained his company’s operational accounts, funneled 1.8 million dollars into an offshore account in Nevis registered under Vanessa’s maiden name, and then staged a fake bankruptcy to avoid paying his employees and creditors.

Even worse, my late husband had discovered the fraud two months before he died. He had left a signed affidavit in the safe with a clear instruction:

“If Daniel ever attempts to leverage the family home or claim hardship, release these documents to the State Attorney General. He must learn that actions have consequences.”

I sat in the quiet, dim study, tears filling my eyes.

My son had not come home three months ago because he needed his mother’s love or shelter. He had come home to systematically strip my remaining assets while hiding nearly two million dollars in a tax haven.

And Vanessa’s cruelty toward me had not been random—it was a deliberate strategy to make me feel weak, crazy, and helpless so I wouldn't question their presence in my home.

I closed the folder, picked up my phone, and called my former colleague at the District Attorney’s office, Senior Prosecutor Marcus Vance.

“Marcus,” I said, my voice steadying into absolute resolve. “I have the forensic paper trail your office was looking for eighteen months ago.”
