THE EASTER RECKONING / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Cancelled GalaBy 4:15 p.m., the tree-lined street outside my estate was in total gridlock.

Dozens of luxury sedans, sports cars, and private valets were backed up along the curb. Over thirty dressed-up guests stood on the sidewalk in evening gowns and suits, murmuring in shock as they watched the scene unfolding on my front lawn.

There was no catered gourmet dinner. There was no live string quartet—I had cancelled their contract at 3:15 p.m.

Instead, the catered food delivery truck arrived, looked at the sheriff’s deputy standing near the gates, and promptly turned around to drive away with all forty meals.

Vanessa stood in the center of the driveway, screaming at the delivery driver. “Bring that food back! I paid for that with my credit card!”

“Actually, Vanessa,” I called down from the porch, holding up a printout, “you used my corporate credit card that you stole from my desk last month. I reported the charge as fraudulent twenty minutes ago. The bank cancelled the payment.”

A collective gasp swept through the crowd of high-society guests standing near the gate.

Vanessa’s face turned bright purple. She turned to her friends, her voice cracking hysterically. “She’s lying! She’s a crazy, bitter old woman! She’s jealous of my success!”

One of her closest friends, a wealthy woman named Evelyn, stepped forward, looking at Vanessa with disgust. “Vanessa... you told us this was your family’s private estate. You said your mother-in-law was just your housekeeper!”

Daniel stepped between his wife and his friends, his hands held up defensively. “Evelyn, please! It’s a family misunderstanding! My mother has early-onset dementia! She doesn't know what she’s doing!”

I picked up my portable PA speaker—the one I used for neighborhood association meetings—and turned it on.

My voice echoed loudly over the entire street, clear, crisp, and undeniable.

“Good afternoon, everyone,” I announced smoothly. “I am Margaret Miller, sole owner of this estate and retired real estate attorney. I apologize for the inconvenience, but today’s party is officially cancelled. My son, Daniel, and his wife have been formally served with an eviction notice for identity theft and forging my signature on a four-million-dollar mortgage application.”

The street erupted into utter chaos.

Vanessa’s friends began turning on their heels, rushing back to their cars in embarrassment. Several business investors who had come to discuss funding Daniel’s tech startup shook their heads in anger, pulling their business cards back from their pockets.

“You’re finished, Daniel,” one investor growled as he opened his car door. “I don't do business with frauds who rob their own mothers.”

Within fifteen minutes, every single car had sped away, leaving Daniel and Vanessa standing alone on the driveway among scattered white lilies and empty champagne glasses.
