Chapter 6 - The Confession in ChainsBy Friday afternoon, Daniel had spent three days inside a small, windowless concrete cell at the county detention center.

Stripped of his tailored Italian suits, his credit cards, his luxury car, and his mother’s constant flattery, his fragile, narcissistic ego completely disintegrated.
Inside Interrogation Room B, Daniel sat under the harsh fluorescent lights, wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit, his hands bound by heavy steel wrist chains.
Sitting across from him was Assistant District Attorney Sarah Jenkins and my sister Evelyn.
Daniel looked hollow, pale, and thoroughly defeated. His hair was unwashed, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands trembled uncontrollably against the metal table.
“Where is Clara?” Daniel whimpered, his voice cracking as he looked at Evelyn. “Why hasn't she come to see me? I’m her husband!”
“You broken her ribs, Daniel,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet tone. “You pushed her to the floor while your mother laughed. You are not a husband. You are a criminal defendant facing twenty-five years in a state maximum-security penitentiary.”
Daniel buried his face in his chained hands, weeping hysterically. “I’m sorry! I swear to God I’m sorry! I was under so much financial pressure! The company was failing! My mother kept demanding money! I didn't mean to hit her!”
ADA Sarah Jenkins slid a thick blue document across the table.
“This is a full, unreserved guilty plea agreement, Mr. Vance,” Sarah stated flatly. “You will plead guilty to First-Degree Aggravated Assault, Corporate Wire Fraud, and Grand Larceny.”
Daniel looked at the paper through his tears, his lips shaking. “What... what is the sentence?”
“Twelve years in state prison,” Sarah answered. “Plus complete surrender of all personal equity, full restitution of $1.2 million to the Mercer Trust, and a permanent, non-expiring order of protection barring you from ever contacting Clara again.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn, his eyes wide with pathetic, desperate begging. “Evelyn... please... talk to Clara... tell her to give me a second chance! I love her!”
Evelyn stood up from her chair, looking down at him with pure, unyielding contempt.

“Clara doesn't care about your tears, Daniel,” Evelyn said softly. “She’s busy rebuilding the life you tried to break.”
Ten minutes later, Daniel signed his name on every line of the plea agreement, his tears smudging the black ink on the paper.
