THE DEED AND THE DEBT / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - The Eternal LightThree years after the night my ribs were broken.

On a golden Saturday afternoon, the sun bathed the manicured seaside gardens of our new coastal estate in a warm, radiant light.

Friends, family, and colleagues gathered beneath a white silk canopy for a true celebration of love, integrity, and new beginnings.

I stood at the head of a flower-lined aisle wearing a breathtaking, simple white silk gown. Across from me stood Marcus Sterling, looking sharp and handsome in a dark navy suit, his eyes shining with tears of pure, unadulterated devotion.

Evelyn, acting as my maid of honor, smiled tearfully from the side, holding a bouquet of white lilies and fresh lavender.

The officiant smiled at us, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle ocean breeze.

“Do you, Clara Mercer, take Marcus Sterling to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love, honor, and cherish through every season of life?”

I looked into Marcus’s warm, steady eyes—the man who had respected my strength, supported my healing, and brought light into every dark corner of my life.

“I do,” I said, my voice clear, steady, and radiant with joy.

“And do you, Marcus, take Clara to be your lawfully wedded wife?”

“With every breath in my body,” Marcus answered softly.

“Then by the power vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife,” the officiant declared. “You may kiss the bride!”

Marcus stepped forward, pulling me gently by my waist, and kissed me with a tender, deep passion that brought thunderous applause and cheers from our family and friends.

After the ceremony, Marcus and I walked out to the edge of the stone cliff overlooking the sparkling blue ocean below. The afternoon sun was setting, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and deep violet.

Marcus wrapped his arms securely around my waist from behind, resting his chin softly against my shoulder as we watched the waves roll onto the shore.

Three years ago, I had lay on a cold marble floor, bleeding and terrified, holding broken ribs while two cruel people laughed above me.

They had thought that by striking me, they were breaking a fragile, helpless dependent.

They had failed to realize one fundamental truth:

When you strike a woman built on truth, integrity, and quiet inner strength, you don't break her.

You simply shatter the illusion, expose their weakness, and ignite the light that will illuminate her world forever.

I rested my head back against my husband’s chest, held his warm hands in mine, and stepped forward into our bright, eternal dawn.
