Chapter 9 - The Trial of the SocialiteThe trial of The State of New York v. Celeste Miller was the most talked-about court case of the season.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, my hand resting in my father's, watching as the prosecutor presented the mountain of evidence we had compiled. The digital ledger, the forged charity accounts, the video recordings of her siphoning tips, and the footage of her break-in at Bellamy House were all laid bare before the jury.

Celeste's defense team tried to paint her as a victim of psychological distress, a young woman who had succumbed to the pressure of high society. But the jury was not swayed. The sheer malice of her actions, combined with her physical assault on me, left no room for mercy.

"We, the jury, find the defendant, Celeste Miller, guilty on all counts of grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, commercial burglary, and physical assault," the foreperson announced, her voice ringing clear through the silent courtroom.

The judge slammed his gavel. "Celeste Miller, you have shown a shocking lack of remorse, a history of financial greed, and a terrifying capacity for cruelty toward those you deemed beneath you. I sentence you to twelve years in a state penitentiary, with no possibility of parole."

Celeste let out a piercing shriek, falling to her knees as the bailiffs grabbed her arms, pulling her back. "Uncle Adrian, please! Help me! Evelyn, I’m sorry! I’m sorry!"

I stood up, my face calm and serene, and walked out of the courtroom beside my father. She was finally facing the consequences of her choices, and I was finally free.
