The Crescent of Hope / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Crescent of HopeThe rich, velvety red wine hit my face before I even understood that Celeste had tipped her glass. One second, I was standing beside her table at Bellamy House, Manhattan’s most exclusive dining room; the next, a cold, sticky crimson wave was running down my cheeks, soaking my starched white collar, and dripping onto the polished marble floor.

"Trash belongs in the kitchen," Celeste laughed, her voice carrying easily over the soft classical music playing in the background.

A chorus of polite, cruel giggles erupted from her six wealthy friends. Before I could even wipe my eyes, Celeste lunged forward, her manicured hand gripping the collar of my uniform. With a violent, deliberate twist, she ripped the fabric down the front. The sound of tearing cotton echoed loudly through the dining room.

Gasps rolled through the crowd of two hundred high-society guests. I instinctively stumbled backward, clutching my torn shirt to my chest to cover myself. But I wasn't fast enough. The sudden tear had completely exposed the skin above my collarbone, revealing a distinct, dark crescent-shaped birthmark right over my heart.

Near the center table, a heavy mahogany chair scraped violently across the floor.

"Stop!"

The voice was a thunderclap. Adrian Vale, the billionaire real estate tycoon and primary investor of Bellamy House, stood tall, his face completely pale beneath his silver hair. He didn't look at Celeste. His intense, trembling gaze was locked onto the birthmark over my heart.

Beside him, Celeste’s smug smile instantly vanished. "Uncle Adrian," she stammered, stepping back. "I was just putting this insolent girl in her place. She refused to serve my guests."

Adrian ignored her entirely. He crossed the dining room as if the rest of the room had vanished, his expensive leather shoes clicking heavily on the marble. He stopped just two feet from me, his hands shaking so violently he had to tuck them into his suit pockets.

"What is your name?" he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion that shocked everyone in the room.

"Mara. Mara Ellis," I said, trying to keep my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins.

He stared at the crescent mark, then his eyes traveled lower, landing on the small, scratched silver locket hanging from a cheap cord around my neck. It was the only possession I had left from the night I was abandoned at a bus station twenty years ago.

"Who gave you that surname?" Adrian’s voice was barely a breath.

"The state," I replied softly. "I grew up in the foster system."

Celeste rushed forward, her heels clicking frantically. "Uncle Adrian, she is obviously a scammer! She probably painted that mark on herself to get your attention! Management! Have this garbage thrown out immediately!"

But I didn't flinch. Calm was the one possession poverty had never been able to take from me. While Celeste mistook my silence for fear, I knew exactly what lay hidden in the digital files of my phone, which was currently recording from the service station behind her.

I met Celeste's glaring eyes, reached behind the server counter, and tapped the screen. For the first time that night, I let a cold, calm smile touch my lips.
