Chapter 6 - Shadows on the PorchTwo days later, Richard Vance sat in his sunlit home office, sipping coffee, reviewing the blueprints for the Pine Ridge Luxury Resort Grand Opening.

His phone rang sharply on the desk.

It was his lead project manager at the construction site.

“Richard!” the manager panicked over the line. “We’ve got a major problem! State marshals just pulled up to the site with a federal court order! They’ve shut down all heavy equipment and frozen our building permits!”

Richard stood up so fast his coffee spilled across his mahogany desk. “What?! On what grounds?! I own that land!”

“They said the original title deed was flagged for criminal forgery,” the manager shouted over the noise of sirens. “And Richard... the person who filed the injunction... is your stepdaughter, Emma!”
