The document proved that the very land Richard Vance was currently developing into a fifty-million-dollar commercial resort project... was legally owned by Emma Carter!
Richard had forged Arthurâs signature on a quitclaim deed six months before Arthur died, assuming the old man had lost his memory and that Emma would remain a timid, helpless child who would never inspect her grandfatherâs estate.
Emma held the paper against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The man who had thrown her out onto the street with forty-two dollars... was living in a million-dollar home built entirely on stolen money that belonged to her.
By seven o'clock that morning, Emma packed the legal journal, the certified deeds, and a sample of the forged documents into her backpack. She locked the cabin door, walked down the gravel trail, and caught the morning bus straight to the county courthouse in downtown Pine Ridge.
