Chapter 3 - The Hollow Sound in the CedarBy her third night in the cabin, Emma had scrubbed the floorboards, cleared the overgrown sunflowers around the porch, and patched the small drafts near the windows.

At midnight, while lying in the small iron bed listening to the rain tap against the metal roof, she heard a strange, rhythmic clicking sound coming from behind the master bedroom wall.

CLICK. THUD. CLICK.

At first, she froze, thinking it was mountain squirrels or mice nesting in the insulation. But as she sat up and listened closely, she realized the sound wasn't random. It sounded like metal shifting against wood under structural pressure.

Emma pulled her flashlight from the nightstand and walked up to the exterior wall near the side porch.

She tapped her knuckles along the dark cedar planks.

Thud. Thud. Hollow.

Near the bottom corner of the exterior wall, right above the stone foundation, three heavy planks were rotted and cracked. Emma knelt on the damp earth, shined her flashlight through a wide gap in the broken siding, and gasped!

The space inside the wall wasn't empty insulation.

Hidden beneath a false wooden panel was a massive, secret compartment built directly into the cabin’s double-frame foundation!

Inside the hidden space sat stacks of rubber-banded hundred-dollar bills, Mason jars overflowing with vintage gold coins, land title deeds, sealed legal envelopes, and a thick, leather-bound journal bearing her grandfather’s initials stamped in gold leaf: A.C.

Emma’s hands trembled violently as she pulled the rotting boards away, revealing a fortune hidden from the world!
