THE BABY THEY TRIED TO ERASE / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Moretti Family Had Another Heir

By sunrise, federal agents were inside Rocco Moretti’s mansion.

That sentence would once have been unimaginable.

Now Rocco opened the door himself.

He wanted everything documented.

Every false medical record.

Every hidden room.

Every payment.

Every tunnel.

He had spent half his life believing secrecy meant security.

It had almost cost two children their lives.

The investigator leading the case was Special Agent Dana Cross.

She was forty-five, unimpressed by wealth, and apparently immune to Rocco’s reputation.

“You understand anything you tell us can be used against you?”

“Yes.”

“You’re voluntarily surrendering financial records?”

“Yes.”

“Phones?”

“Yes.”

“Property access?”

“Yes.”

She studied him.

“Why?”

“My children.”

“That simple?”

“Yes.”

Cross nodded.

“Good.”

Antonio slept upstairs with Elena.

Sophia refused to leave him.

Rocco’s daughter Emilia was traced to a private foster home in Connecticut.

The foster parents believed they had received the infant through a legitimate emergency placement.

Everything had been forged.

Rocco drove there personally.

Agent Cross insisted on coming.

When the foster mother brought Emilia into the living room, Rocco forgot how to breathe.

She had dark curls.

Brown eyes.

A tiny dimple.

She looked like Camille.

And him.

Rocco did not reach for her.

He had learned something from Isabella.

Biology did not create immediate trust.

“Can I sit?”

The foster mother nodded.

Emilia watched him suspiciously.

He smiled.

She stared.

Then grabbed his tie.

Rocco laughed.

The sound surprised everyone.

Cross looked away as though giving him privacy.

Rocco touched one tiny hand.

“I’m sorry I didn’t know about you.”

Emilia responded by trying to eat his tie.

Probably fair.

Camille remained missing.

Then, two days later, she walked into an FBI field office in Manhattan.

Alive.

Terrified.

Angry.

Rocco met her only after she agreed.

Camille had been Valentina’s cousin, but the women had hated each other since childhood.

Valentina approached Camille with money.

Claimed Rocco needed a biological heir but could not know the arrangement because of “family security.”

Camille refused initially.

Then her father’s medical bills became overwhelming.

She agreed to surrogacy using material Valentina had obtained without Rocco’s knowledge.

When Emilia was born, Valentina promised adoption.

Instead, Camille realized the child was being hidden.

She threatened police.

Valentina staged Camille’s death to discredit any future claim and forced her overseas using threats against Camille’s family.

“Why come back now?” Rocco asked.

Camille’s eyes filled.

“Because I saw the news about the baby.”

Antonio’s discovery had leaked despite every effort.

“I knew she had done it again.”

“Why didn’t you contact me earlier?”

“You were Rocco Moretti.”

He understood.

“You thought I would kill you.”

“I thought you ordered it.”

That accusation was becoming familiar.

And deserved in ways Rocco hated.

His reputation had protected his business.

It had also convinced innocent people he was capable of crimes committed in his name.

“I didn’t.”

“I believe that now.”

Rocco looked at her.

“What do you want regarding Emilia?”

Camille began crying.

“I don’t know.”

Rocco nodded.

“You don’t have to decide today.”

She stared.

“You’re not taking her?”

“No.”

“She’s biologically yours.”

“And yours.”

Camille covered her face.

For the first time, Rocco understood fatherhood was not inheritance.

It was restraint.

It was choosing the child over ego.

Valentina remained missing.

The tunnel exited through an abandoned greenhouse half a mile away.

A vehicle collected her.

Registered to D’Angelo Imports.

Camille’s father’s company.

But Camille’s father had died six months earlier.

Or officially had.

Rocco no longer trusted death certificates.

The vehicle was later found burned.

No body.

Agent Cross discovered Valentina had transferred $14 million over three years.

Not from Rocco’s accounts.

From her own family trust.

She had funded the entire operation independently.

“Why?” Rocco asked Camille.

Camille looked uncomfortable.

“She was obsessed with becoming the mother of the Moretti heir.”

“She could have told me she couldn’t have children.”

“She could have adopted.”

“Yes.”

“But that wasn’t enough.”

“What was enough?”

Camille looked at him.

“Control.”

That word again.

Valentina had grown up watching old-money families treat bloodlines like currencies.

She believed producing a biological Moretti heir would secure her status forever.

When doctors told her pregnancy was impossible, she did not accept reality.

She constructed one.

First Emilia.

Then Antonio.

The plan had been to present a baby that resembled Valentina closely enough to avoid suspicion.

Emilia resembled Camille too strongly.

So Valentina hid her.

Antonio resembled Isabella.

Again, unacceptable.

Rocco felt ill.

“They were children to her.”

“Yes.”

“Not people.”

“Symbols.”

That night, Rocco returned home.

Sophia sat at the kitchen table doing homework.

Antonio slept nearby.

Elena prepared a bottle.

“You should rest,” Rocco said.

“So should you.”

“I’m not good at it.”

“Neither am I.”

Sophia looked up.

“Did you find the other baby?”

“Yes.”

“Is she okay?”

“Yes.”

“Is she your daughter?”

Rocco nodded.

Sophia smiled.

“So Antonio has a sister.”

“Yes.”

“Cool.”

Adults made dynasties complicated.

Children understood siblings.

Rocco sat opposite her.

“You saved him.”

Sophia shrugged.

“I picked him up.”

“You saved him.”

“I heard him.”

Rocco looked at her.

“What do you want?”

Sophia frowned.

“For what?”

“A reward.”

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“No?”

“I don’t want money.”

“Most people do.”

“My mom says money makes people weird.”

Elena looked embarrassed.

“Sophia.”

“It does.”

Rocco laughed.

“What do you want?”

Sophia thought.

“Can Antonio have a yellow room?”

“A yellow room.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Babies like yellow.”

“Do they?”

“I do.”

Rocco nodded solemnly.

“Yellow room.”

Sophia returned to homework.

Then the mansion phone rang.

Elena answered.

Her face changed.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“What?”

“For you.”

Rocco took it.

A woman’s voice.

Valentina.

“You found Emilia.”

“Yes.”

“You always were efficient.”

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“You nearly killed my son.”

“I didn’t.”

“You tried to make him disappear.”

“I protected this family.”

“No.”

Silence.

“You protected your fantasy.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You think Isabella will stay innocent?”

“What does that mean?”

“She lied to you too.”

“About?”

“Ask her why she was chosen.”

Rocco’s grip tightened.

“You chose her.”

Valentina laughed softly.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“You did.”

Rocco went still.

“I never met Isabella before.”

“That’s what she told you?”

His stomach tightened.

Valentina continued.

“Boston. Nine months ago. Charity gala.”

Rocco remembered.

The missing six hours.

“She was there.”

“Yes.”

“You arranged it.”

“Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

Valentina whispered:

“Isabella approached me first.”

The call ended.

Rocco stood in silence.

Elena watched him.

“What happened?”

He looked toward Antonio.

Then toward the rain outside.

“I’m going back to Isabella.”

May you like

Because if Valentina had told even one piece of truth, then the woman he had believed to be solely a victim had entered the story long before the basement.

And Rocco was about to discover that the night Antonio was conceived had begun with a betrayal nobody had yet confessed.
