THE BABY THEY TRIED TO ERASE / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - Sophia Chose Her Own Last Name

Sophia’s tenth birthday became a legal crisis.

Not because of anything dramatic.

Because of a form.

School registration.

The clerk asked Elena:

“Has the child’s legal surname changed?”

Sophia looked up.

“Why would it?”

Elena hesitated.

Because Sophia’s birth certificate had been corrected.

Because her biological mother was Gabriella D’Angelo.

Because her adoptive mother was Elena Bellini.

Because lawyers suggested clarifying identity before future inheritance proceedings.

Rocco attended the meeting accidentally.

Meaning Sophia insisted.

The attorney explained options.

Bellini.

D’Angelo.

Hyphenated.

Something else.

Sophia listened.

Then asked:

“Can I pick?”

“Yes.”

“Bellini.”

Gabriella smiled.

The attorney blinked.

“You don’t want to consider—”

“No.”

“Why?”

Sophia looked at Elena.

“That’s my mom.”

Simple.

Final.

Gabriella cried quietly.

Rocco watched.

Later, he asked whether it hurt.

Gabriella shook her head.

“No.”

“Really?”

“I gave her life.”

She watched Sophia arguing with Elena about cake.

“Elena gave her a childhood.”

Rocco nodded.

There were things biology could create.

And things it could not.

That afternoon, a package arrived.

From prison.

Valentina.

Inside was a letter addressed to Sophia.

Elena wanted to throw it away.

Sophia asked to read it.

They agreed together.

Valentina apologized.

Not perfectly.

She still justified too much.

But one sentence stood out:

You were the first person in that house who treated Antonio like a baby instead of an heir.

Sophia stared at it.

Then folded the letter.

“Can I write back?”

Elena frowned.

“What do you want to say?”

Sophia thought.

“Maybe that I forgive her.”

Rocco looked at her.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

“Why would you?”

“Because I don’t want to think about being mad anymore.”

Adults spent years in therapy learning things children occasionally understood immediately.

Sophia wrote:

I forgive you, but that doesn’t mean what you did was okay. Antonio is doing good. Emilia is funny. My mom says forgiveness doesn’t erase consequences. I hope you become better.

Rocco stared.

“Your mom really says things like that?”

“All the time.”

Elena laughed.

Valentina eventually began prison counseling.

Whether she changed, nobody knew.

But she stopped appealing her sentence.

Anthony died in prison two years later from natural causes.

Nobody staged anything.

The state confirmed.

Twice.

Luca joked that the family required three independent doctors now.

Rocco didn’t laugh.

Then did.

D’Angelo Maritime was reorganized.

Sophia’s inherited shares were placed into an independent trust.

At fourteen, she started attending quarterly educational meetings.

At fifteen, she asked why executives made twenty times more than warehouse employees.

By sixteen, management feared her.

Rocco was proud.

“You created a monster,” Matteo told Elena.

“She was always like that.”

Rocco and Elena moved slowly.

Very slowly.

He proposed after three years.

Not with diamonds.

He knew better.

He cooked dinner.

Badly.

Sophia helped secretly.

The pasta was overcooked.

The sauce burned.

Smoke alarm activated.

Elena arrived home to chaos.

Rocco stood in the kitchen holding a ring.

Sophia whispered:

“Now.”

Rocco dropped to one knee.

Elena covered her mouth.

“You planned this?”

“Yes.”

“This?”

“It went differently in my head.”

Sophia shouted:

“Say yes before the firefighters come!”

Elena laughed until she cried.

Then looked at Rocco.

“I have conditions.”

“Of course.”

“No bodyguards on dates.”

“Fine.”

“No calling me Mrs. Moretti if I keep Bellini.”

“Fine.”

“Sophia keeps Bellini.”

“Obviously.”

“No secret rooms.”

Rocco almost laughed.

“Very much agreed.”

“No deciding things for me because you think you’re protecting me.”

That one mattered.

“I promise.”

“And if another baby appears behind a kitchen…”

“Please don’t.”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

Rocco stood.

She kissed him.

Sophia screamed.

May you like

The smoke alarm continued.

It was perfect.
