THE BABY THEY TRIED TO ERASE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Trial of Valentina Moretti

The newspapers called it the Moretti Baby Conspiracy.

Rocco hated the phrase.

Antonio was not a conspiracy.

He was a child.

Emilia was not an asset.

Sophia was not an heir.

Yet headlines turned them into symbols.

Valentina pleaded guilty to conspiracy, unlawful confinement, fraud, identity manipulation, and multiple charges involving Isabella and Camille.

She refused to plead guilty to attempted murder.

Prosecutors accepted a deal after determining Anthony had escalated several plans beyond what Valentina authorized.

It did not make her innocent.

It made her crimes specific.

Anthony refused every deal.

He went to trial.

Gabriella testified.

Camille testified.

Isabella testified.

Elena testified.

Rocco did too.

The courtroom was full when he took the stand.

Anthony’s attorney attempted to destroy Rocco’s credibility.

“Mr. Moretti, you are asking this jury to believe you knew nothing about criminal activity occurring inside your own home?”

“Yes.”

“You expect us to believe the legendary Rocco Moretti was unaware?”

“I was unaware.”

“Convenient.”

“No.”

Rocco looked at the jury.

“Humiliating.”

The attorney paused.

That was not the answer expected.

Rocco continued.

“I built my reputation on being the man who knew everything. I didn’t know my wife had confined a pregnant woman beneath my house. I didn’t know my daughter existed. I didn’t know my son was almost removed from my life. I didn’t know a priest I trusted was selling information.”

He looked toward Isabella.

“My reputation didn’t make me powerful.”

Then toward Sophia.

“It made people too afraid to tell me the truth.”

The courtroom became silent.

The attorney changed direction.

Anthony was convicted.

Valentina received fourteen years.

Anthony, seventy-four, received effectively life.

Thomas Reed and Father Angelo accepted plea deals.

Several doctors lost licenses.

The private clinics closed.

D’Angelo Maritime entered court supervision.

Sophia’s shares were protected until adulthood.

Elena was legally appointed trustee only after a lengthy independent review.

When attorneys asked whether she wanted compensation, she laughed.

“I clean houses for a living.”

“You now control assets worth hundreds of millions.”

“I still need to clean my kitchen.”

Rocco smiled.

Elena hated wealth.

That made him trust her with it.

Isabella chose to raise Antonio jointly with Rocco.

Not romantically.

Not secretly.

They created a custody arrangement.

Rocco purchased a home for her nearby.

She refused the mansion.

“I spent enough time there.”

He understood.

Camille reunited with Emilia slowly.

The foster family remained part of Emilia’s life.

Again, no clean lines.

No simple labels.

But the children were loved.

That was enough.

Luca testified against Anthony and Valentina.

He returned to legitimate Moretti businesses afterward.

Rocco surprised everyone by announcing he would dismantle the criminal side of the Moretti organization.

Luca stared.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“You realize half the people we know will hate you.”

“Half already do.”

“We’ll lose money.”

“Yes.”

“Power.”

“Probably.”

Luca smiled.

“You’re getting old.”

“Careful.”

They began moving assets into legal enterprises.

Real estate.

Logistics.

Restaurants.

Security.

The transition was ugly.

A few old partners threatened retaliation.

Rocco walked away from deals he once would have defended violently.

Some men called him weak.

He went home to Antonio.

Their opinion stopped mattering.

Elena remained working at the mansion for another two months.

Then Rocco found her packing.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

His chest tightened unexpectedly.

“Why?”

“The criminal case is finished.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s my job.”

“You don’t need the job.”

“I know.”

“Then?”

She looked at him.

“I don’t want Sophia growing up here thinking we belong because you rescued us.”

Rocco understood.

“You don’t owe me anything.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

“I also don’t want her thinking money makes people family.”

“Agreed.”

“So we’re leaving.”

Rocco hated it.

Which told him she was right.

“Where?”

“Our apartment.”

“It’s small.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“Careful.”

He smiled.

“Sorry.”

“You should visit sometime.”

His heart moved.

“Visit?”

“Yes.”

“As what?”

She smiled faintly.

“Sophia’s uncle.”

Cruel woman.

“And your?”

She started walking.

“You’ll have to figure that out.”

Rocco stood in the doorway watching Elena and Sophia leave the mansion.

Antonio asleep in his arms.

For decades, people had fought to enter Rocco Moretti’s world.

Elena Bellini was the first person who walked away from it voluntarily.

He had never wanted anyone more.
