Chapter 13 - Rebecca Paid the Last Two Hundred Dollars

Rebecca’s repayment plan lasted nine years.

She increased payments as her income grew.

Two hundred became five hundred.

Then one thousand.

She never repaid the full historical amount mathematically because part was handled through restitution and asset recovery.

But she tracked what she considered personally owed.

One afternoon she handed me an envelope.

“Last payment.”

I stared.

“You kept doing this?”

“Every month.”

“I know. I just stopped checking.”

“That’s good.”

Inside was a check for $200.

Same amount as her first payment.

Symbolic.

“I want you to cash it.”

“I don’t need it.”

“I do.”

So I did.

Then I framed the deposit receipt.

She laughed.

“Psychotic.”

“Financial risk professional.”

We hugged.

For the first time since childhood, I felt like she was my sister without also feeling like her emergency fund.
