Chapter 11 - My Mother Finally Said the Sentence

Beatrice was seventy when she finally said it.
“I was jealous of you.”
We were sitting on my porch in Massachusetts.
I almost laughed.
“Of me?”
“You became everything I was taught a woman should not need to become.”
Independent.
Financially secure.
Professionally respected.
Beatrice married at twenty-two.
Never built a career.
Made family management her identity.
Rebecca’s dependence made her necessary.
My independence made her feel irrelevant.
“So you punished me?”
“I told myself you didn’t need help.”
“Different sentence.”
“Yes.”
She cried.
“I was cruel.”
There it was.
No context afterward.
No because.
No family.
Just cruel.
I held her hand.
Not because everything vanished.
Because I had waited years for accuracy.
“I forgive you.”
She cried harder.
Our relationship never became perfect.
But it became honest.
She stopped comparing me and Rebecca.
Stopped asking me to finance gatherings.

Started paying her own way to visit.
Sometimes healing is embarrassingly mundane.
