Chapter 12 - Vance Asked Me to Read His Letter

Vance asked to meet before Alexander’s eighth birthday.
Daniel was comfortable.
Rebecca knew.
We met in a café.
He handed me a sealed letter.
“What is this?”
“Something I wrote for Alex.”
“Why me?”
“I want you to tell me if it makes excuses.”
That surprised me.
I read.
Dear Alex, you were born into lies adults created before you could understand anything. None of those lies belong to you. Your mother and I loved each other in a way that hurt other people because we were selfish and dishonest. Daniel believed you were his child because we let him believe it. Valerie was my wife, and I betrayed her with your mother. These facts are not your burden. They are ours.
I stopped.
“Good.”
“Keep going.”
The letter explained without blaming.
No romanticizing the affair.
No calling destiny.
No implying Valerie’s marriage failed first.
At the end:
If you ever feel ashamed of how you were born, remember that children do not inherit moral debt.
I cried.
“This is good.”
Vance exhaled.
“Thank you.”
“You’ve changed.”
“I had help.”
“Therapy?”
“Mostly consequences.”
We laughed.
I no longer hated him.
May you like
I also no longer wondered what our life could have been.
That was peace.
