Chapter 9 - Graham Went to Prison

Graham pleaded guilty to conspiracy involving historical bribery and unlawful shipping arrangements.
Sentence: thirty months.
Far less than prosecutors could have sought because cooperation dismantled broader network.
He did not ask me to attend sentencing.
I did anyway.
Judge asked if he wished to speak.
Graham said:
“For years I believed protecting my family meant controlling what they were allowed to know. I called secrecy protection because it sounded honorable. It was still deceit.”
He looked at me.
“I also used my marriage as evidence of my own respectability while failing to respect the woman inside it.”
The courtroom was silent.
“I am sorry.”
I cried.

Not because I wanted him back.
Because he finally named it.
