SILVER TRAP - Story this / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - THE CONTRACEPTIVE TRUTHThe pregnancy was Vanessa's armor. As long as Daniel believed she was carrying his child, he would never truly cast her out. To break her, I had to shatter the armor.

The opportunity came on Saturday. Vanessa, sensing that Daniel was still distant despite her "apology," decided to throw a small "pregnancy announcement" dinner at the estate. She invited a few of Daniel’s closest friends and business partners, eager to solidify her status as the future mother of the Vance heir.

She didn't invite me, of course. But I showed up anyway, wearing a stunning silver-gray silk dress that matched my new hair.

"Eleanor!" Vanessa gasped when I walked into the dining room. She was wearing a loose-fitting cream dress, already subtly holding her stomach as if she had a visible bump. "I... I didn't think you'd be up for socializing."

"I wouldn't miss this for the world, Vanessa," I said warmly, greeting the guests. "After all, we are celebrating my future grandchild."

Daniel looked at me with deep appreciation, clearly moved by my "generosity." Vanessa, however, looked incredibly nervous. She didn't like me being this close to her guests.

As the dinner progressed, the conversation naturally turned to the pregnancy.

"How far along are you, Vanessa?" one of Daniel’s business partners asked. "You look absolutely glowing."

"Just about eight weeks," Vanessa lied smoothly, smiling at Daniel. "We are so excited. The doctor said the baby is growing perfectly."

"Speaking of doctors," I chimed in, tapping my glass gently to get everyone’s attention. "I actually have a surprise for you, Vanessa. I know how stressful it is to find the right care, so I took the liberty of inviting a very special guest tonight. He’s an old friend of our family, and one of the top OBGYNs in the state."

The door to the dining room opened, and Dr. Robert Sterling walked in. He was a distinguished man in his late 50s, holding a medical file.

Vanessa's face went completely white. Her fork slipped from her hand, clattering against her porcelain plate. "D-Dr. Sterling?"

"Hello, Vanessa," Dr. Sterling said, smiling warmly at the guests. "Eleanor told me you were celebrating tonight. I was happy to stop by, especially since we saw each other just last week at the clinic."

Daniel looked confused. "Last week? Vanessa, you told me you went to the clinic alone for your routine checkup."

"I... I did!" Vanessa stammered, her voice shaking. "Dr. Sterling, I think you have me confused with another patient. We shouldn't talk about medical things at dinner."

"Nonsense, dear," I said, my voice dripping with concern. "Dr. Sterling is family. And actually, he wanted to personally congratulate you on the successful procedure you had last Tuesday."

"Procedure?" Daniel’s voice was suddenly very quiet. He stood up, looking from Vanessa to Dr. Sterling. "What procedure?"

Dr. Sterling, realizing the tension in the room, looked slightly uncomfortable but continued, believing he was sharing good news. "Oh, the contraceptive implant, of course. Vanessa came in to renew her long-term hormone implant. It’s a very simple, highly effective procedure. It guarantees no pregnancy for the next three years."

The dining room fell into a suffocating, dead silence.

Daniel turned his gaze to Vanessa. "An implant? To prevent pregnancy?"

"Daniel, no!" Vanessa shrieked, standing up so fast her chair fell backward. "He’s lying! He’s confused! I’m pregnant, I swear! I have the tests!"

"Dr. Sterling is the head of the clinic, Vanessa," I said softly, pulling a piece of paper from my purse and placing it on the table. "And this is the official invoice from his office, which was sent to my house by mistake. It’s for a contraceptive implant, billed to your name, dated last Tuesday. The same day you told Daniel you were hearing the baby’s heartbeat."

Daniel picked up the paper. His eyes scanned the document, and I watched the last remaining piece of his love for Vanessa die right then and there.

"You lied," Daniel said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound betrayal. "There is no baby."

"Daniel, please, let me explain!" Vanessa cried, reaching for his hand, but he slapped her hand away with a force that startled the entire room.

"Get out," Daniel whispered.
