Chapter 8 - The Rebuilt Foundation

Over the next two years, my bond with Marcus grew into the deepest, most fulfilling partnership I had ever known.

Marcus was everything Brian had never been: protective without being controlling, deeply supportive of my career, patient, and grounded in an unshakeable moral compass. When we worked together, there was no manipulation, no hidden ledgers, and no deceit—only the pure, joyful harmony of two equals building a life of purpose.

We expanded Vance Integrity Solutions into one of the most respected forensic firms in New England, recovering over forty million dollars in defrauded funds for vulnerable hospitals and regional schools.

On a radiant afternoon in late June, Marcus and I hosted an intimate gathering on the stone terrace of our Vermont farmstead.

Twinkling fairy lights hung from the ancient apple trees, a live bluegrass trio played softly by the brook, and fifty of our closest friends, colleagues, and family sat around long wooden tables decorated with fresh white hydrangeas and sunflowers.

Marcus walked over to where I was standing near the stone terrace wall, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and kissing my temple.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Marcus asked softly.

"I'm thinking about how far we've come," I smiled, leaning back against his chest.

Marcus turned me gently in his arms, looking deep into my eyes with a look of pure, breathtaking devotion.

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.

Inside rested a magnificent, five-carat emerald-cut sapphire ring surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds, reflecting the deep blue of Lake Champlain.

"Hannah," Marcus spoke, his deep baritone resonant with love. "You walked through the darkest valley with unmatched courage and rebuilt your world on truth and honor. I want to stand as your shield, your partner, and your best friend for all the days of my life. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over my cheeks.

"Yes, Marcus!" I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, a thousand times yes!"

Marcus lifted me into his arms, kissing me beneath the summer sun as our friends erupted into thunderous, joyful cheers.
