Chapter 3 - The Forensic Ambush

Rossi stepped to the side of the bed, pulling a specialized biometric digital scanner from his leather briefcase.

He reached down, taking my right hand, pressing my limp thumb against the cold glass screen.

BEEP.

"Authorization confirmed," the digital interface chimed softly. "Transfer of $42,500,000 to Apex Horizon Holdings initiated."

"Beautiful," Frank chuckled from the doorway. "Now, when the State Attorney General’s task force traces the missing bypass bond funds on Monday, the digital signature, the IP routing from her laptop, and the offshore deposit trail will point directly to Hannah Mercer. We report her erratic behavior, present the photos of her substance abuse, and Brian plays the heartbroken husband."

"Clean. Efficient," Rossi agreed, snapping his briefcase shut. "Make sure she stays asleep until we clear the state line."

They exited the room, locking the door behind them.

The moment their footsteps faded down the stairs, my eyes snapped wide open.

I rolled off the bed, retrieved the micro-camera from the wall outlet, and plugged it into my smartphone. The video file was flawless: full 4K footage of Victor Rossi and Frank Mercer discussing the embezzlement, using my thumbprint, and explicitly confessing to framing me.

I pulled out my secure satellite phone—a device provided to me forty-eight hours earlier by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

I dialed Special Agent Marcus Vance.

"Vance," the line clicked.

"Agent Vance, this is Hannah Mercer," I said, my voice steady, sharp, and razor-focused. "The biometric transfer was executed two minutes ago. I have 4K audio-visual confirmation, full facial recognition on Victor Rossi, and the unredacted digital hash keys for the Apex Cayman accounts."

"Outstanding work, Hannah," Agent Vance replied, the sound of sirens already audible in his background. "Tactical units Alpha and Bravo are surrounding the Mercer perimeter. Hold your position in the upstairs room until we breach."

I unlocked the bedroom window, breathing in the crisp Kansas air, watching three unmarked tactical vans pull silently into the tree line outside the estate.

The trap had closed.
