Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH AFTER THE GUNSHOT|

Adrian survived surgery, but the bullet had passed dangerously close to his liver.
Elena waited outside the operating room for four hours, refusing food and ignoring every call from the clinic. Dominic sat beside her, his hands clasped between his knees.
“He'll pull through,” Dominic said.
“You don't know that.”
“No. But Adrian is stubborn.”
Elena looked at the closed doors.
“He used to pretend he wasn't afraid of anything.”
“Was he?”
“Terrified. He just hated letting people see it.”
Dominic nodded.
“That sounds like him.”
When the surgeon finally emerged, Elena stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.
“He's stable,” the doctor said. “The next twenty-four hours will be important, but the surgery went well.”
Elena closed her eyes.
For the first time since the kidnapping, she allowed herself to breathe.
Adrian woke the following afternoon.
His first word was not his mother's name or a question about the family.
“Elena?”
She moved to his bedside.
“I'm here.”
He looked at her hand.
The black-diamond ring was still there.
“I thought Vincent had taken it.”
“He tried. I hid it before he moved me.”
Adrian gave a faint smile.
“You always were smarter than me.”
“That's not a difficult achievement.”
He laughed, then winced.
“Don't make me regret surviving.”
She adjusted his pillow.
“You nearly died. You don't get to complain.”
For a while, they sat in silence.
Then Adrian's expression grew serious.
“I remember more now. Not everything, but enough.”
Elena waited.
“I remember leaving your father's clinic. I remember wanting to turn back. I remember thinking that if I stayed, Vincent would use you against me.”
“You could have told me the truth.”
“I should have.”
“You could have trusted me.”
“I should have done that, too.”
He looked directly at her.
“I cannot give you back ten years. I can't undo the birthdays you spent alone or the letters you wrote to someone who never answered. I can't ask you to pretend that the man who returned to the clinic was the man you fell in love with.”
Elena felt tears burn behind her eyes.
“Then don't ask.”
“I won't.”
“Because I don't know whether I love you now, Adrian. I know I loved Matthew. I know I mourned him. But I don't know who you are yet.”
He nodded slowly.
“Then let me show you.”
She studied his face.
“You don't get to buy forgiveness with apologies.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to decide what is safe for me without asking.”
“I understand.”
“And if we try again, there will be no secrets.”
Adrian reached for her hand but stopped just short.
“May I?”
After a moment, Elena placed her hand in his.
“Yes.”
He held it gently, avoiding the ring.
“I would like to earn the right to know you again.”
Elena squeezed his fingers.
“Then start by getting better.”
He smiled.
For the first time, she saw the young man beneath the scars—not because he had recovered every memory, but because he was finally willing to face the truth.

Their story was not repaired.
But it was no longer being written by Vincent Moretti.
