Chapter 1 - THE RING HE DIDN’T REMEMBER|

At 11:17 on a freezing November night, Elena Ross saw the man she had waited ten years to meet again.

He entered her emergency clinic surrounded by armed men, wearing a charcoal suit that probably cost more than her annual salary. His black hair was shorter than she remembered. A thin scar cut through his left eyebrow, and his shoulders carried the unmistakable tension of someone accustomed to giving orders that people obeyed without question.

But his eyes were the same.

At least, they should have been.

Elena had imagined their reunion a thousand times. In some versions, she slapped him. In others, she demanded an explanation. Sometimes, in the lonely hours before dawn, she imagined him taking her face between his hands and explaining that every unanswered letter had been written under circumstances she could never understand.

She had never imagined him looking through her as if she were a stranger.

“Ma’am, where’s the doctor?” one of his men demanded.

Elena turned toward the wounded man on the gurney.

“I'm the nurse in charge until Dr. Harris arrives. Keep talking if you want, but you’ll have to do it somewhere that isn’t blocking my equipment.”

The gunman stepped toward her.

“You’d better keep him alive.”

“Then stop threatening the person trying to save him.”

The man’s hand moved toward his jacket.

“Enough,” the stranger at the door said.

One word. No shouting.

Every armed man immediately fell silent.

Elena hated that she recognized the authority in his voice. Ten years had passed, but some memories remained cruelly precise.

She concentrated on the patient. The bullet had entered beneath his right ribs. His pulse was racing, his blood pressure dropping, and his breathing becoming shallow.

“Dr. Harris!” she called. “We need the trauma team now.”

For six minutes, she worked without looking at the man who had once promised to return.

Then her glove caught on a metal tray and tore.

The cuff rolled back, revealing the ring she had worn every day for ten years.

Antique platinum. A black diamond held between two sculpted serpents.

The man stopped breathing for half a second.

He crossed the room so quickly that Elena barely had time to turn.

His fingers closed around her wrist.

“Where did you get that?”

Elena stared at him.

“Let go.”

His gaze remained fixed on the ring.

“Where did you get it?”

The question hurt more than she expected. He had given it to her beneath a summer sky, promising that she was the only person he had ever trusted with his heart.

Now he looked at the ring as though it were evidence of a crime.

“You gave it to me,” she whispered.

His expression changed.

Not with recognition.

With suspicion.

“I have never seen you before in my life.”

For a moment, the entire clinic seemed to tilt.

Elena pulled her wrist free.

“Then you must have forgotten a great deal more than my name.”

She turned back to the patient, forcing her hands to remain steady.

Behind her, the man stared at the black diamond with an expression that frightened his own soldiers.

Because Matthew had been the name he used when he arrived at her father’s clinic ten years ago.

And the name of the man standing in front of her now was not Matthew.

It was Adrian Moretti.

The most feared mafia boss on the East Coast.

And according to every newspaper Elena had read over the past decade, he had spent the last ten years building an empire out of violence, loyalty, and secrets.

What the newspapers did not know was that the man who had just denied knowing her had once fallen asleep with his head in her lap while she read him terrible romance novels.

What Elena did not know was that Adrian Moretti had arrived at her clinic expecting to identify a wounded traitor.

He had never expected to find the woman whose disappearance had haunted him for ten years.

And he certainly had not expected to see his own ring on her hand.
