Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY COUNCIL|

The Moretti family council convened in a private room beneath an old Manhattan hotel.

Seven men sat around a polished table, each representing a different branch of the family business. Some had built legitimate companies. Others had inherited influence through fear. All of them understood that Vincent Moretti's power had protected their interests for years.

Adrian entered with Dominic and placed a folder on the table.

Vincent was already seated.

“You're late,” he said.

“I was deciding how much of the truth to bring.”

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the ledger, financial records, and the restored audio transcript.

The council members began reading.

One man swore under his breath.

Another immediately closed the folder.

Vincent remained still.

“These documents are fabricated.”

“Then explain the account numbers,” Adrian said.

“Anyone can manufacture a ledger.”

“Explain the payments to Dr. Sloane.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“Your personal physician?”

“The doctor who falsified my records after the attack.”

A council member looked up.

“Is that true?”

Adrian placed the audio transcript in front of him.

“Listen to the recording.”

Vincent rose.

“This is a private family matter.”

“No,” Adrian replied. “It's a criminal matter. The difference is that I will no longer help you hide behind the word family.”

A murmur passed around the table.

Vincent's voice sharpened.

“You owe everything you have to this family.”

“I owe my life to a doctor you tried to silence. I owe my memories to a woman you tried to erase. I owe my future to nobody who demands that I betray the innocent.”

“You think the council will follow you after you expose us?”

“Some will. Some won't. That's their choice.”

A council member placed his copy of the transcript on the table.

“I want an independent audit.”

Another nodded.

“So do I.”

Vincent looked around the room, disbelief replacing his confidence.

“You're choosing a woman you barely know over the men who built this organization?”

Adrian answered without hesitation.

“I'm choosing evidence over fear.”

The vote took less than ten minutes.

Five members agreed to suspend Vincent's authority over the legitimate businesses pending an independent investigation. Two abstained.

Vincent had not lost his criminal network, but the respectable empire that shielded it was beginning to collapse.

As the council members filed out, Vincent approached Adrian.

“You've made an enemy you cannot defeat.”

“I know.”

“You will regret this.”

“Maybe.”

Vincent leaned closer.

“And Elena? Do you believe she will stay when she learns what you've done?”

Adrian's face hardened.

“She is free to leave whenever she wants.”

Vincent seemed genuinely puzzled.

“Then what do you have left?”

Adrian glanced at the empty chair where Elena would have sat if she had accepted his invitation.

“My conscience.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“Your father would be ashamed.”

Adrian stepped aside.

“No. My father would finally recognize me.”

Vincent left the room.

Outside, Dominic handed Adrian his phone.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Elena leaving the clinic that morning.

Beneath it were six words.

The woman you love is next.

Adrian's expression changed.

May you like

The council's vote had not ended the war.

It had only made the target clearer.
