Chapter 6 - The Forensic Cleaning

The days following the wedding debacle were a whirlwind of media coverage and legal battles. The headlines across the country were relentless: "HALE MERIDIAN EMPIRE COLLAPSES: BILLIONAIRE HEIR ARRESTED AT ALTAR." The video of Victor being led away in handcuffs, recorded by my father’s old video camera which Daniel had cleverly set up in the choir loft, went virally insane on social media, racking up millions of views in hours.
But the real battle was happening inside the glass towers of the federal building.
Daniel sat at the center of a massive conference room, surrounded by six federal prosecutors and a team of IRS forensic accountants. His fingers flew across his keyboard, pulling up the hidden ledgers he had extracted from the Hale Meridian servers.
"Look here," Daniel explained, pointing to a shifting sequence of numbers on the projection screen. "Victor thought he was being clever by using my internal credentials to authorize these transactions. But he forgot that every corporate network logs the physical MAC address of the device making the entry. These wires didn't come from my desk in Columbus. They came directly from Victor’s private laptop inside his penthouse at the Ritz."
The lead prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named Sofia, nodded in deep appreciation. "That’s the smoking gun, Daniel. It proves intentional frame-up and identity fraud. We can officially drop any investigation into your accounts."
Meanwhile, Elena was back at the pediatric clinic, her focus returning to the patients who truly needed her. The physical wounds on her back were healing, but the emotional scars were a slower process. Every time the clinic doors opened, she would glance up with a sudden, protective start.
I spent my afternoons sitting in the clinic's waiting room, a constant, quiet presence. I wanted her to know that the shield hadn't vanished just because the handcuffs were on.
One afternoon, Sofia called my phone. "Elena's case is solid, Mariana. The grand jury has returned a true bill on twenty-four counts of wire fraud, embezzlement, and aggravated assault against Victor. Conrad is looking at fifteen years minimum, and Victor won't be seeing the outside of a federal facility for a decade."

I looked through the glass partition at Elena, who was currently laughing with a small toddler in a dinosaur t-shirt. "Thank you, Sofia," I said softly. "Make sure they don't get a single dollar back."
"Oh, we won't," Sofia laughed. "The assets are being liquidated to pay back the defrauded charities. The Hale legacy is officially history."
