Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

The grand cathedral turned into a chaotic courtroom in less than sixty seconds.

Victor’s face went from smug triumph to a ghostly, sickly white. He looked wildly around the room, searching for his security detail, but his personal guards were already pinned against the stone pillars by armed federal marshals. Conrad Hale attempted to shout, his face contorting in an ugly, arrogant rage as he pointed a finger at the lead agent.

"Do you know who I am?" Conrad roared, his voice echoing off the stained glass. "I fund your department's oversight committees! I will have your badges by noon!"

"You won't have a checking account by noon, Mr. Hale," the agent replied coldly, sliding a thick manila folder from his jacket. "The federal court has issued an emergency asset-freeze order on all domestic and offshore holdings tied to Hale Meridian Bank and its subsidiary foundations. Your empire is officially under federal receivership."

Victor looked past the agents, his eyes locking onto Elena, who was standing perfectly still in the center of the aisle. The realization finally hit him. He saw me standing behind her, holding my phone, a calm, victorious smile on my face.

"You," Victor hissed, lunging forward toward Elena, his hands clenching into fists. "You did this, you little—"

Before he could take a second step, two burly marshals grabbed his arms, forcing them violently behind his back. The loud, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the silent cathedral.

"Elena Vance has been cooperating with a federal grand jury investigation for the last forty-eight hours, Mr. Hale," the lead agent said, stepping between Victor and my daughter. "And as for the physical assault charges filed against you this morning... we have the forensic photographs to ensure you won't be seeing bail."

Pilar Hale let out a high-pitched, aristocratic shriek from the front pew, dropping her champagne flute as she watched her son and husband get led down the aisle in chains. The five hundred guests watched in absolute, paralyzed silence as the powerful Hale family was marched out of the cathedral like common criminals.

Elena drew a long, deep breath, the tension in her shoulders finally melting away. She looked at me, a tear of pure, unadulterated relief tracing a path through her makeup.

"It’s over, Mom," she whispered.

"It's just the beginning, sweetheart," I said, taking her hand. "Let's go home and change out of this dress."
