Chapter 4 - The Cathedral Sanctuary

At exactly 10:58 a.m., the massive oak doors of St. Jude’s Cathedral swung open. The traditional wedding march swelled from the pipe organ, filling the towering stone architecture with a grand, heavy sound.
Five hundred guests rose in unison, turning their heads toward the back of the aisle.
At the altar stood Victor Hale. He looked immaculate in a custom black tuxedo, his dark hair slicked back, his face carrying a smug, triumphant smile. Next to him stood his father, Conrad Hale, looking like a king who had successfully secured his dynastic succession. Victor looked down the long aisle, expecting to see a broken, submissive girl walking toward him in fear.
Instead, Elena stepped onto the marble runner. She held her head high, her eyes fixed entirely on Victor with a look of cold, unyielding defiance that made his smile falter for a fraction of a second. She wasn't carrying a bouquet of white roses; her hands were empty, clasped smoothly in front of her dress.
I walked a few paces behind her, my phone tucked securely inside my jacket pocket, waiting for the vibration.
Halfway down the aisle, Victor’s brow furrowed. He noticed that Elena wasn't smiling. He noticed that her pace was slow, measured, almost mechanical. He leaned slightly toward his best man, his jaw flexing with irritation.
Buzzz.
The heavy vibration against my chest made my heart leap. I pulled the phone out smoothly. The text from the US Marshal was a single line: “Teams are inside the perimeter. Moving now.”
I looked up at the altar. Conrad Hale had just noticed the sudden movement at the back of the cathedral. The heavy oak doors hadn't just closed—they had been forcefully pushed open again by twelve men wearing tactical vests with the letters FBI and IRS FORENSIC emblazoned in stark white across their chests.

The wedding march abruptly died as the organist froze in terror. A collective gasp ripped through the five hundred high-society guests as the federal agents marched down the aisle, their boots thudding violently over the marble floor.
"Conrad Hale! Victor Hale!" the lead agent announced, his voice booming through the cathedral acoustics. "Federal warrants have been executed for your arrest regarding grand wire fraud, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement. Step away from the altar immediately."
