Chapter 3 - The Bloodline of ShadowsThe revelation hit me harder than any bullet.

I stared at Adrien, my breath catching in my chest, the cold rain tapping violently against the SUV’s reinforced glass windows.

“No... that’s impossible,” I stammered, pulling my hands back. “My mother was an elementary school teacher! Her name was Sarah Miller! We lived in a tiny cottage in Saratoga!”

“Sarah Miller was a fake identity created by the Federal Witness Protection Program,” Adrien explained, his tone measured and heavy. “In 2011, your mother stole the master ledger containing every bank account, official bribe, and corporate deed belonging to the Russian syndicate led by Viktor Sokolov. She vanished into thin air with her seven-year-old daughter.”

The black SUV took a sharp, aggressive turn onto the Long Island Expressway, the engine roaring as our escort vehicles boxed out the two chasing sedans on the wet highway.

“Sokolov spent fifteen years searching for that ledger,” Adrien continued, pulling the scratched photograph from my dress pocket and holding it up under the soft interior light. “When your mother died in that alleged car accident fifteen years ago, the police claimed the child died beside her in the burning wreck. But you didn't die, Lena. Someone saved you, changed your records, and hid you in plain sight.”

Memory fragments began surfacing in my mind—fragments I had spent my entire life suppressing as childhood nightmares.

A dark night. The smell of burning rubber. A woman with dark, warm eyes pushing me into the arms of a strange man in a dark coat, screaming at me to run and never tell anyone my real last name.

“Marcus...” I whispered, realization dawning on me with sickening clarity. “Marcus’s father... he wasn't a gambler.”

“Marcus’s father was the federal agent assigned to protect your mother,” Adrien confirmed, his jaw tightening. “He sold her location to Sokolov fifteen years ago for three million dollars. And when Marcus found out who you were three months ago, he targeted you—not because he loved you, but to find where your mother hid that ledger before Sokolov realized you were alive.”

Tears spilled down my cheeks as the horror of my three-year relationship with Marcus was laid bare.

Every sweet word he had spoken, every gift he had bought, every time he had isolated me from my friends—it was all a cold, calculated strategy to locate my mother’s hidden treasure. And when I couldn't remember my past, he turned to violence out of desperation.

Suddenly, a loud explosion echoed behind us.

I looked back. One of the chasing sedans had been forced off the highway embankment by Adrien’s security detail, erupting into a ball of orange fire against the concrete barrier.

“One down,” Marco reported coldly from the front seat. “The second car is backing off.”

Adrien didn't even look back at the explosion. He reached over, wiping a stray tear from my cheek with his thumb, his touch unexpectedly soft for a man who commanded a criminal empire.

“You spent three years being hunted by a coward, Lena,” Adrien said, looking directly into my eyes. “Starting tonight, the hunters become the prey.”
