Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of BelongingAlara stared at the key and the legal documents, her heart hammering inside her chest.

“He didn't do this to buy your affection,” Arthur added, closing the portfolio. “He did it because he believes in your dignity. He has resigned from his position as CEO of Vance Holdings today to step away from the public eye.”
Tears streamed down Alara’s cheeks as the magnitude of Julian’s silent love hit her like a wave. He hadn't tried to change her world or treat her as a charity case; he had shielded her from the dark forces of his own world, sacrificing his own power to give her security.
Without hesitation, Alara stripped off her waitress apron. She grabbed her coat, picked up Mia, and ran out of the diner into the cool Seattle rain.
She took a taxi directly to the top floor of the Vance Tower.
The corporate offices were in chaos following Julian’s sudden resignation announcement. Board members argued loudly in glass conference rooms, and assistants scrambled with cardboard boxes.
Alara pushed past the security desk, holding Mia’s hand tightly as she walked straight into the main executive suite.
Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the rainy skyline of Seattle. He had taken off his suit jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled up, looking tired, human, and completely stripped of his corporate armor.
He turned as the door opened, his eyes widening in shock as he saw Alara and Mia standing in the doorway.
“Alara... what are you doing here?” Julian asked, his voice barely a breath.

Alara walked across the polished marble floor until she was standing just inches from him.
“You left your paper bird at Table Seven,” Alara said, her voice shaking with profound emotion as she held up the folded napkin crane.
