Chapter 6 - Shadows on the WireThe subtle bond forming at Table Seven did not go unnoticed by the outside world.

As CEO of Vance Holdings, Julian was constantly surrounded by corporate rivals, investigative journalists, and ruthless paparazzi. A disgruntled former employee of the Rusty Spoon had snapped a high-resolution photograph of Julian sitting in the cheap vinyl booth, smiling warmly at a waitress and her young daughter.

By Tuesday morning, the photo was splashed across the front page of Seattle’s leading business tabloid:

“THE ISOLATED BILLIONAIRE: Is Julian Vance Distracting Himself with a Cheap Diner Waitress Amid Vance Holdings’ Looming Shareholder Vote?”

The article spun a cruel narrative, portraying Alara as a scheming gold-digger trying to trap an elite CEO, while questioning Julian’s mental focus ahead of a crucial multi-billion-dollar green energy acquisition.

When Alara arrived at the Rusty Spoon for her morning shift, she was greeted by a wall of news vans and aggressive reporters shoving cameras into her face.

“Ms. Torres! How long have you been seeing Julian Vance?”

“Is it true he bought you luxurious gifts?”

“Are you using your daughter to secure a financial settlement?”

Alara pushed through the crowd, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She burst through the front door, locking it behind her, her face pale with humiliation and anger.

Inside, the diner’s owner, a gruff older man named Sal, looked at her with a mix of pity and frustration. “Alara... this media circus is ruining business. If this doesn't clear up by the end of the week, I’m going to have to let you go.”

Alara felt her world crumbling around her. Her simple, honest life was being shredded by a world she never asked to enter.
