Chapter 15 - The Unspoken Bond|

The lead guard groaned on the cold brick, clutching his broken wrist, while the second guard scrambled to his feet, bloody and disoriented, pulling his partner toward their vehicle.
"Get out of here," Daniel warned, standing at the top of the steps, his chest heaving slightly, the tire iron held loose at his side. "And tell Michael Harrison that if his men come back to this street, they won't walk away next time."
The two guards scrambled into their black sedan, speeding away into the night with their tires smoking against the asphalt.
The front door of the row home opened slowly.
Catherine stood in the doorway, holding Claire, her dark eyes wide with shock as she looked at Daniel standing on her porch under the streetlights.
"Daniel..." she gasped, stepping out into the cool air. "Are you okay?"
Daniel set the tire iron down on the porch bench, breathing heavily as he wiped a small smear of grease from his forearm.
"I'm fine," Daniel said softly, looking up at her. "Are you and Claire safe?"
"We're safe," Catherine whispered, tears filling her eyes as she looked at the man who had just risked his life and career to protect her family. "Daniel... why did you do that? Michael could destroy your career."

Daniel stepped closer, stopping two feet from her on the small porch, his clear gray eyes looking deep into hers.
"Because eleven years ago, I watched my mother stay with a man just like Michael Harrison," Daniel said softly, his voice thick with an old, quiet pain. "I watched her wait for him every night while he destroyed everything around her. I promised myself I’d never let another woman go through that alone."
