Chapter 12 - The Hospital Visit|

By two o'clock that afternoon, Daniel Brooks was finishing his shift at Northwestern Memorial, walking through the main lobby toward the parking garage.

As he stepped through the glass doors into the cold afternoon air, two large men in black coats stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, blocking his path.

Behind them, a sleek black Maybach idled at the curb, its rear window rolling down slowly.

Michael Harrison sat in the back seat, a lit cigar held between his fingers.

"Dr. Brooks," Michael called out, his deep voice carrying over the sound of traffic. "Get in."

Daniel stopped, holding his medical bag in his right hand. He looked at the two broad-shouldered guards flanking him, then walked slowly over to the open window of the Maybach.

"I have a long drive home, Mr. Harrison," Daniel said calmly. "What do you want?"

Michael took a slow drag from his cigar, blowing a plume of gray smoke into the cold air between them.

"You were very vocal in my wife's hospital room yesterday," Michael said smoothly. "I don't like men who get vocal around my family."

"I'm a doctor, Mr. Harrison," Daniel replied, his gray eyes unblinking. "My job is to care for my patients. Your wife was my patient."

Michael leaned closer to the window, his expression turning into a terrifying mask of cold authority.

"She’s not your patient anymore," Michael whispered. "And if I find out you’ve been contacting her, or helping her hide from my security team, I’ll make sure you never practice medicine in Pennsylvania again."

Daniel stared at him for three long seconds. He didn't flinch. He didn't step back.

"Is that a threat, Mr. Harrison?" Daniel asked quietly.

"It’s an advice," Michael said flatly, rolling the black window back up as the Maybach pulled away into the afternoon traffic.
