Chapter 4 - Beneath the Mud and Gray

|

"What did you just say?" Vanessa whispered, stepping back half a pace as her hand flew to the diamond engagement ring at her throat. "Security! Marcus, get out here and remove this lunatic from the terrace immediately!"

Two burly men in dark tailored suits—private guards Vanessa had insisted on hiring from a Manhattan firm the week before Evan’s trip—pushed through the French doors of the mansion, their hands resting near their belts.

Behind Grace’s skirt, seven-year-old Sophie peeked out in terror as the guards approached. Her wide hazel eyes swept past the white-linen tables and locked onto the tall man in the muddy flannel shirt standing at the top of the garden steps.

He wasn't looking at the ground anymore. He was looking straight at her with the exact gentle tilt of his head he used every night when he tucked her in.

Sophie’s small mouth fell open.

"Daddy?" she whispered.

Every head at the fifty tables turned toward the flowerbeds.

Slowly, deliberately, Evan Whitaker took off his tattered canvas cap and dropped it onto the white marble. With his right hand, he gripped the spirit-gum edge of the gray-streaked beard along his jawline and tore the prosthetic cleanly from his face, wiping the dark theatrical dirt from his cheekbones with his sleeve.

A collective gasp swept across the terrace. Margaret Vance dropped her silver fork onto her porcelain plate with a loud clatter.

Vanessa went white as chalk, stumbling backward until the back of her knees hit the edge of the center table, knocking a crystal vase of white roses over onto the linen.

"Evan?" Vanessa breathed, her voice barely audible. "You—you’re supposed to be in London until Tuesday! I talked to your hotel concierge this morning!"

"Daddy!" Caleb screamed, dropping his velveteen rabbit onto the stones and sprinting across the terrace as fast as his three-year-old legs could carry him.

Evan dropped to both knees on the marble and caught his son and daughter in his arms at the same time, burying his face against their small shoulders while Sophie sobbed into his muddy flannel collar.

"I’m right here, baby," Evan murmured fiercely against Sophie’s hair, holding both children tightly against his chest as he stood up to his full six-foot-two height. "Daddy’s right here. There’s only one set of rules in this house now, and she’s never going to hurt you again."

"Evan, darling, let me explain!" Vanessa stammered wildly, holding both hands out as the society photographers began snapping frantic pictures of the billionaire in gardener’s clothes holding his weeping children. "The stress of organizing the foundation while you were away—Sophie has been acting out terribly, and this maid has been filling their heads with lies!"

Evan didn't even look at Vanessa. He looked straight past her at Grace Miller, whose cheek was still swollen from the blow she had taken for his daughter.

"Why were you sleeping outside my children’s bedroom door for six nights, Grace?" Evan asked quietly.

Grace glanced once at the two armed guards freezing near the French doors, then reached inside the collar of her grey housekeeper’s uniform. She pulled out a tiny black micro-SD card no larger than a fingernail and pressed it firmly into Evan’s dirt-stained palm.

"Because Vanessa isn't the person coming into their bedroom at two o'clock in the morning, Mr. Whitaker," Grace said softly.

Evan’s heart stopped. "Then who is?"

Grace turned her head toward the second-floor windows of the mansion.

Before she could speak the name, every high-decibel security siren inside Whitaker Hall erupted at once. Heavy steel hurricane shutters began slamming down over every ground-floor window from the inside, locking the mansion into total lockdown, and across the marble terrace, Vanessa’s terrified expression suddenly twisted into a cold, triumphant smile.
