Chapter 12 - A Father’s Interrogation

|

For five seconds, the only sound in the sunny nursery was the distant wail of the downstairs alarms and the ragged rasp of Dr. Vane’s breathing.

Evan stared at the man who had delivered Caleb into the world—the man who had stood beside Evan at Clara’s rainy graveside and patted his shoulder while Sophie cried in her little black coat.

Clara hadn't died in an accident. She had been murdered in her own driveway with a syringe before she ever turned the key in the ignition, all because she had tried to protect the company she built for her children.

Evan didn't kill him. Killing Vane here in the nursery would dishonor the room where his children slept, and it would rob Clara of the public reckoning she deserved.

Instead, Evan ripped the heavy fiberglass casting tape from Vane’s own medical bag, bound the doctor’s wrists and ankles tightly to the radiator pipe beneath the window, and stuffed a sterile gauze roll into his mouth.

"Look at the laptop, Mr. Whitaker," Grace called urgently from Sophie’s desk, pointing at the open screen where the voice-cloning program and the estate’s internal security map were running side by side. "The biometric vault behind your master study is sixty feet down the main corridor. The six-day retinal handshake from the children’s scans is already loaded into the staging server—all Arthur is waiting for at 12:00 PM is the final override from the central security hub in the basement, or your live thumbprint."

Evan looked at the digital clock in the corner of the screen: 11:51 AM.

"Why would the basement server open the vault without my thumbprint?" Evan asked sharply, stepping over to the desk.

"Because three weeks ago, when Vanessa hired Marcus’s security firm to 'upgrade' the mansion’s fire-safety system, they wired a thermal-bypass relay into the vault door," Grace explained rapidly, typing across the keyboard. "If the house remains in full fire-lockdown mode for twenty minutes without a manual cancellation from your master study console, the vault door automatically unlocks at noon to allow 'emergency retrieval of irreplaceable bearer bonds and biological patents.' That’s why Vanessa smiled when the alarms went off!"

Evan’s eyes widened as the sheer brilliance and depravity of the trap became clear.

They didn't even need him alive anymore. By triggering the house-wide fire and security lockdown at 11:40 AM, Arthur and Vanessa only needed to keep Evan pinned outside in the gardens for twenty minutes until the clock struck twelve, walk into the master study, empty the four-hundred-million-dollar patent server and bearer certificates, and escape by helicopter from the front paddock while the fifty guests were still trapped behind the locked terrace gates.

"Can you kill the signal jammer and the lockdown from here?" Evan asked.

"Not from the nursery laptop," Grace said, slamming the lid shut and slinging the captured submachine gun across her shoulder. "The physical override switch and the main PA amplifier are both inside the security room directly behind the upstairs portrait gallery—and Arthur has three men guarding the corridor between here and the master study."

Evan reached down and picked up the dropped nine-millimeter pistol from the guard Grace had knocked out, checking the chamber with steady hands.

"Then let’s go clear the gallery," Evan said.
