Chapter 17 - Nowhere to Hide

|
The bright daylight footage on the giant terrace screens cut suddenly to the eerie green-and-grey glow of infrared night vision inside the upstairs nursery, timestamped 02:14 AM.
Below on the patio, the State Attorney General stepped closer to the screen, his jaw dropping as he watched Arthur Pendelton—the man standing ten feet above him claiming to be an innocent victim—walk into the dark bedroom with Dr. Julian Vane, peel back sleeping Sophie’s and Caleb’s eyelids, and press a blue laser retinal scanner over the drugged children’s eyes.
Then the screen switched to the 03:00 AM clip.
In the dead silence of the Greenwich estate, fifty horrified guests and six police officers watched seven-year-old Sophie climb into her three-year-old brother’s bed to comfort him—only for the baby monitor on the nightstand to light up and blast the cold, AI-synthesized clone of Evan’s voice through the speakers:
"I can see you through the camera, Sophie. And I hate little girls who tattle on Vanessa. If you say one word to me when I come home, I am going to put both of you in a dark car and give you away forever."
Up on the balcony, Arthur went completely limp against the stone balustrade, his knees buckling as the final video clip appeared on the sixteen-foot screens: Dr. Julian Vane, recorded ten minutes earlier in the upstairs nursery, weeping into Grace’s camera lens.
"I didn't touch her car! Clara found out that Arthur was falsifying the clinical trial budgets on the pediatric oncology patent! I just gave her a shot at the house an hour before she left—Arthur told me it was a mild beta-blocker, I didn't know it would make her pass out behind the wheel on the parkway!"
The recording ended, leaving the frozen frame of Arthur’s offshore bank wire transfers and the Zurich liquidation contract glowing in ten-foot letters above the terrace.
Down on the marble patio, nobody spoke for three full seconds.
Then the lead state trooper captain lowered his weapon from Evan and pointed directly up the exterior stone staircase at Arthur and Vanessa.
"Troopers, get up on that balcony right now!" the captain roared. "Place Arthur Pendelton and Vanessa Sterling under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, child abuse, and kidnapping!"
On the balcony, Vanessa’s mind snapped completely under the weight of fifty pairs of disgusted eyes and flashing press cameras. She turned like a cornered wildcat on Arthur, raking her manicured fingernails across his cheek and ripping his silk tie before the troopers even reached the top of the stairs.
"This was all his idea!" Vanessa screamed hysterically down at the Attorney General as four uniformed troopers burst onto the balcony and wrenched her arms behind her back. "Arthur killed Clara three years ago! I didn't even know Evan back then! He promised me twenty million dollars if I married Evan and kept the kids quiet during the scans! Make a deal with me—I’ll testify against him!"

"Shut your mouth, you stupid bitch!" Arthur roared as two troopers slammed him chest-first onto the limestone coping and snapped steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Evan didn't say a single word to either of them as they were dragged past him down the stone steps. He simply reached out as Vanessa passed, slipped his mother’s antique pearl bracelet off her cuffed wrist before it could enter a police evidence locker, and let the troopers haul her away.
