CHAPTER 10 — A FATHER'S PROMISE

CHAPTER 10 — A FATHER'S PROMISE

Three days later.

The Williams Tower boardroom.

Every director had arrived.

Television cameras broadcast live across the country.

Richard sat confidently at the head of the table.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"As acting Chairman—"

The boardroom doors burst open.

Every head turned.

I walked inside.

Still wearing the same navy suit.

Emily entered beside me.

Alive.

Weak.

But standing.

Gasps filled the room.

Richard slowly rose.

"Impossible."

"You should still be in intensive care."

Emily smiled.

"I got tired of disappointing you."

Reporters immediately surrounded us.

Richard forced a smile.

"My dear niece..."

"I'm so happy you've recovered."

Emily looked him directly in the eyes.

"You pushed me."

The room exploded.

Richard laughed loudly.

"Do you have proof?"

"I do."

Another voice echoed through the boardroom.

Everyone turned.

Victor walked in.

Bruised.

His jacket torn.

Holding the recorder.

Richard's face turned white.

"You..."

"I survived."

Victor placed the recorder onto the conference table.

"You forgot one thing."

"You taught me how to collect evidence."

He pressed PLAY.

Richard's confession echoed through every speaker.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

One director slowly stood.

Then another.

Then another.

Nobody looked at Richard anymore.

Everyone looked at me.

The empire had changed hands without a single vote.

Police officers stormed into the room.

"Richard Williams..."

"You're under arrest for conspiracy, attempted murder, fraud, obstruction of justice, and multiple counts of homicide."

Richard smiled.

Not frightened.

Not angry.

Just...

Calm.

He slowly looked toward me.

"You think you've won?"

"I know I have."

Richard chuckled.

"No."

He pointed toward the photograph still lying on the table.

The man in black.

"Find him."

"If you can."

Then Richard leaned close enough that only I could hear.

"I was never the king."

"I only built the throne."

"The real king..."

"...is still waiting."

He was handcuffed and led away.

The cameras followed him.

But I wasn't watching Richard.

I was looking at Victor.

The son I had never known.

For a long moment...

Neither of us moved.

Finally...

I walked toward him.

"I don't deserve to ask this."

His jaw tightened.

"I know."

"But..."

My voice broke.

"If Lucas were standing here..."

"He'd probably tell you to give me one chance."

Victor looked away.

His eyes were red.

"I hated you."

"I know."

"I dreamed about killing you."

"I know."

He laughed bitterly.

"But after I learned the truth..."

He couldn't finish.

Instead...

He reached into his pocket.

The old silver pendant.

He placed it in my hand.

"Mom kept this..."

"...because she believed you'd come back."

I closed my fingers around it.

For the first time in twenty-five years...

I embraced my son.

Victor stood frozen.

Then, slowly...

He hugged me back.

Across the room, Sophia covered her face and sobbed.

Emily smiled through tears.

The family Richard had spent decades destroying...

Had finally begun to heal.

But as police cars disappeared into the distance, Marcus approached quietly.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

Marcus handed me a sealed envelope recovered from Richard's private safe.

Inside was only one black card.

No name.

No address.

Only a single sentence embossed in silver.

"The game has only just begun."

I stared at it for several seconds.

Then I smiled.

"No."

I folded the card in half.

"You made one mistake."

Marcus frowned.

"What mistake?"

I looked at my daughter.

At Sophia.

At Victor.

At the family I had finally found again.

"For twenty-five years..."

"They made me fight alone."

I turned toward the window overlooking the city.

"They'll soon learn..."

"...a father with nothing left to lose..."

May you like

"...is far more dangerous than a billionaire with everything to protect."

THE END... OR IS IT?
