Chapter 4: The Truth Revealed
The Bugatti glided through the heavy iron gates of the Vanguard Estate, a sprawling, forty-million-dollar compound nestled in the hills overlooking the city.
As we drove up the mile-long, tree-lined driveway, the sheer magnitude of my new reality began to set in.
That morning, while I was finishing my shift at the hospital, Mr. Sterling had approached me with a briefcase and a truth that completely shattered my worldview.
My mother had spent my entire life telling me that my biological father, Richard Vance, was a deadbeat alcoholic who abandoned us when I was a baby. It was her favorite story. It was the reason I felt so obligated to take care of her.
But it was a lie.
Richard Vance wasn't a deadbeat. He was a brilliant software engineer. My mother had been the one who cheated on him, divorced him, and forced him out of my life, moving me across the state and changing my last name to hide me from him.
But Richard never stopped watching. He built a tech empire. He became a self-made billionaire. He never remarried, and he never had other children. When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer a year ago, he spent his final months ensuring that his entire fortune, his estates, and his corporate holdings would bypass my mother entirely and transfer directly to me upon his death.
The Bugatti parked in front of the massive stone mansion. A line of household staff was waiting on the grand steps to greet me.
"Welcome home, Ms. Parker," Mr. Sterling smiled gently. "Your father’s journals are waiting for you in his study. He wanted you to know the truth about why he wasn't there."

I stepped out of the car, looking up at the sprawling mansion. I smelled like stale coffee and hospital antiseptic, but for the first time in my twenty-eight years of life, my shoulders didn't ache with the weight of someone else's failures.
My mother and Mia had kicked me out to make room for a few extra boxes of junk. They had no idea that they had just unleashed a queen into her kingdom.
