Chapter 2: The Bugatti Mistral

I walked down the driveway, carrying my trash bag over my shoulder.
The front door clicked open behind me. Mia stepped out onto the porch, holding her phone up, clearly recording a video for her social media.
"Look at the freeloader finally getting kicked out," Mia taunted, her voice dripping with venomous glee. "Have fun sleeping in your car, Lauren! Don't forget to pay the Wi-Fi bill before you leave!"
I reached the curb.
My ten-year-old silver Camry wasn't parked on the street. Instead, taking up the entire length of the curb, was a five-million-dollar, matte-black Bugatti Mistral.
The hypercar was a masterpiece of aerodynamic carbon fiber and aggressive, predatory curves. The engine idled with a low, earth-shaking rumble that made the windows of our cheap suburban house vibrate.
Standing beside the butterfly doors was an older gentleman in a flawless, three-piece bespoke suit. It was Arthur Sterling, the senior partner of the most prestigious estate law firm in the country.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Parker," Mr. Sterling said smoothly, bowing his head slightly. He reached out, effortlessly taking the cheap plastic trash bag from my shoulder as if it were a designer handbag, and placed it into the sleek front trunk of the Bugatti.
Mia stopped recording. She lowered her phone, her mouth hanging open so wide it practically hit the porch.
"What... what is that?" Mia stammered, pointing a shaking manicured finger at the hypercar. "Lauren? Who is that man?!"
I didn't look at her. I looked at Mr. Sterling.
"Is the estate transfer complete, Arthur?" I asked, my voice steady.
"Signed, sealed, and fully executed at 10:00 A.M. this morning, ma'am," Arthur replied, opening the passenger door of the Bugatti for me. "The two billion dollars in liquid assets have cleared into your private accounts. This vehicle was your late father's prized possession. He explicitly requested it be delivered to you today."
"Two billion?!" Mia shrieked from the porch. The color completely drained from her face. She dropped her phone; the screen shattered against the concrete steps. "Lauren, wait! What are you talking about?!"

I finally turned to look at my little sister. She looked like she was about to vomit.
"I'm moving on to my new life, Mia," I said coldly. "Enjoy my old bedroom."
