Chapter 15 - The Last Secret Of The Sterling Family

Richard thought he knew pain.
He was wrong.
Pain was not losing someone.
Pain was discovering you never knew the full story.
The investigation changed overnight.
Adrian Vance was arrested.
Victoria cooperated.
Thomas gave his statement.
But Eleanor’s death remained unanswered.
And Richard could not let it go.
Not anymore.
Detective Hale returned with a file.
“We found something.”
Richard looked up.
“What?”
“Eleanor’s original medical report.”
Richard frowned.
“We already saw it.”
“No.”
The detective placed it down.
“The real one.”
Richard opened it.
His hands shook.
The official cause of death was different.
Not childbirth complications.
Medication failure.
Someone changed the records.
Richard stared.
“Who?”
Detective Hale was quiet.
Then he answered.
“Someone with access to the hospital.”
Richard felt cold.
“Who had access?”
The detective looked at him.
“Your family doctor.”
Richard remembered.
Dr. Samuel Reed.
The man who told him Victoria was dangerous.
The man who helped him uncover the truth.
The man who seemed like an ally.
That night, Richard went to the doctor’s house.
Not with police.
With questions.
The door opened.
Dr. Reed looked surprised.
“Richard?”
Richard stepped inside.
“Tell me the truth.”
The doctor’s face changed.
About what?”
“Eleanor.”
Silence.
Then Richard saw it.
Fear.
The same fear Maya had shown.
The doctor sat down.
“I tried to protect her.”
Richard’s voice lowered.
“From who?”
Dr. Reed looked up.
“From you.”
Richard froze.
“What?”
The doctor opened a drawer.
Inside was another journal.
Eleanor’s.
“She discovered something about your company.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
“She thought you knew.”
The words hurt.
Because maybe that was the truth.
Maybe Eleanor believed Richard was part of it.
Dr. Reed continued.
“But before she died, she changed her mind.”
Richard looked up.
“What?”
“She realized you were being used too.”
The doctor handed him the journal.
The final page contained only one sentence.
Richard,
If you ever find this…
please forgive me.
I should have listened sooner.
Richard stared at the handwriting.
The same words he had been forced to learn.
Listen sooner.
The next morning, Richard returned home.
Maya ran toward him.
He picked her up.
Held her.
And for the first time in years…
he did not check his phone.
He did not think about business.
He did not think about enemies.
He simply listened.
Because sometimes the warning is not a scream.
Sometimes it is a whisper.
A child running toward you.
A tiny hand reaching for yours.
A frightened look you almost ignore.

And sometimes…
saving someone begins with finally seeing what was there all along.
